ProClip for iPhone Review |
I have mentioned before that I have a big problem with my new car not having space for me to put my iPhone down while I am driving. The car has only two cup holders and if I am using both of them there is nothing to do but leave the phone in my pocket. With a five-speed car, it’s very hard to take the phone from a pocket and answer it when driving or to see who is calling before I answer with my Bluetooth headset. Today I am going to look at a new device form ProClip USA that is a vehicle specific cell phone holder for specific phones. I will be looking at the ProClip vehicle mount for the Ford Mustang and the device holder for the iPhone. Read on for all the details.
Features and Specifications
ProClip makes vehicle specific mounts for just about every car on the road. They sent me two mounts for my Mustang with one that is an angled clip fitting on the right side of the center console and the other mount that fits in the center of the dash between the two center AC vents. The firm also offers a third option for the Mustang that puts the phone just to the right of the drivers leg on the left side of the center console.
The ProClip system consists of two parts, the vehicle specific mount, and the device holder. The company makes device holders for just about every handset on the market. The device holders are generic and will fit to any vehicle specific holder available.
Installation and Use
The vehicle mounts are designed to mount to different vehicles in different locations so the options for your specific vehicle may vary from what I am reviewing today. The clips snap in place and then use a tape that is pre-applied to the holder to secure the mount to the car. Before you mount the holder to your vehicle, you install the device holder by using a small screwdriver and included screws.
When I first installed the ProClip in my car, I used it without the tape and found that in most instances the clip snapped onto the center console with enough grip to stay in place with typical driving. However, once the clip came off the console under hard acceleration and once it came off when I hit a large pothole. After the Proclip came off I opted to use the tape as recommended and it has stayed in place no matter the road surface or driving style.
The holder for the iPhone is made specifically for the iPhone model. It fits snugly and keeps the phone in place in any orientation and you can rotate the phone without worrying it will fall out of the holder. There is a version of the holder specifically for the new iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G as well.
In all, the ProClip system is very easy to use and works exceptionally well. This is the perfect complement to a hands free kit in your car to keep your phone handy and in place while driving. The only downside I noticed in my application is that putting the angled vehicle mount down low on the console interfered with my ability to put the car into fifth gear when on the highway. The solution was to move the mount up about six inches and everything is fine now.
Pros
- Looks good
- Works great
- Easy to install
Cons
- Default mounting option interfered with manual shifter on my car
Verdict
The ProClip system works fantastically for keeping your phone in place while driving. Some installations may have to be tweaked a bit, but overall the ProClip system is fantastic.
