The Pedomostick

The PedomostickJust because you use a walking stick it doesn’t mean that you can’t get in on the whole pedometer thing and count your steps. The Pedomostick from Hammacher Schlemmer is like a regular walking stick, but with an integrated pedometer that will count every step you take.

It will calculate the calories you’ve burned and it will measure the distance and time you’ve walked. That’s not all. It also comes with a built-in LCD in the handle to display all of those stats. Oh and there’s also an LED flashlight mounted in the shaft to light your way at night.

CMU touch screen with inflatable buttonsSome people like touchscreens, some not so much. Well, very soon we may just be able to please everybody thanks to this CMU touch screen technology. It sports temporary buttons that pop out(up?) and inflate when you need them. When you don’t they deflate and you once again have a flat surface.

So, very soon everyone can be happy using the same device. For instance, how about a switch that will help users toggle between a button mode and a full touch mode? This may be in your future phone.

British Red Phone Box mobile phone

Posted in Mobile Phones by Conner Flynn on July 20th, 2009

British Red Phone Box mobile phoneBad teeth and Monty Python aside, nothing says British like a red phone box. The phone itself is fully functional and comes with a 65K color TFT screen, a camera, SMS, MMS and GPRS/WAP 2.0. Sure, those specs aren’t great, but it’s a red British phone box. What did you expect?

We really would have preferred a blue version. At least that way, it would be very Doctor Who. They really missed out on that idea. It could have all of the geeky sounds and everything. Oh well. You will get some early 00’s polyphonic style ringtones. 20 to be exact. Stuff like God Save the Queen and other British tunes.

YouTube working on 3D videoEverybody is crazy about 3D. It’s all the rage and we’re happy about that. We truly are. Just as long as we don’t have to wear those dorky glasses. Looks like YouTube is even getting in on the action, working on 3D videos so that you can see stuff like Keyboard Cat in glorious 3D.

YouTube is testing out 3D videos on the site by offering some viewing options for different 3D systems. We’re not sure if this is going to catch on or not. If it does, you’ll want to purchase the sure to follow specialized 3D camcorders that will practically make you feel it as you’re watching some dude get hit in the groin. You know, so you can upload that baby and let the whole world feel the pain

Zoom Q3 mini camcorder with stereo microphones

Zoom Q3 mini camcorder with pro micPeople love small camcorders like the flip because they are convenient and compact. The problem is that you sacrifice audio quality for that small size. The audio just plain stinks. I don’t have to tell you. However, there may just be a way to have that small size and decent audio together in one package.

The Zoom Q3 wants to be that solution. The Q3 is comparably small and features USB connectivity, along with stereo microphones that should outdo the flip. This camera records in Mpeg4 and with a 32GB memory card you can record up to 16 hours of video.

Flossie the motorcycle riding robot

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on July 20th, 2009

Flossie the motorcycle riding robotWith a name like Flossie, you would expect this bot to be extracting teeth from your mouth as it laughs maniacally, but it’s actually the Castrol-developed test rider you see above straddling that cycle. The robot without a cause has a love of cycles and a self-learning mode that lets it feel and test such things in a cycle as throttle response, clutch drag, gear shifting and such for any stationary bike.

That’s right, he “rides” while stationary. We wonder how long it will be before he actually takes one of these bad boys on the road, joining up with Murata Boy and filming a new robot version of Easy Rider. Hit the link for a video.

We’re not yet sure when it launches. All we know is that it will be sometime in September. The bottom line here is that you will be able to do stuff like sync iTunes, add and remove apps, perform firmware updates, create backups and restore from them, and manage multiple BlackBerrys at the same time. That’s pretty big.

N64 casemod of Princess Peach’s castle We’ve seen more Nintendo casemods than there are coins in the Mario Realm, but this one is really over the top. It’s a wild and super creative version of Peach’s castle.

At first glance it looks like a cake, but nope, that there’s a mod dedicated to the Princess herself on top of a fully-functional Nintendo 64 console. According to the ebay ad, “the exterior of the castle has been molded to look like the bricks and roof tiles, then painted. The mural of Princess Peach is a very detailed mosaic and the five flags are made of cloth.”
