New Palm Pre owners report screen discoloration

Posted in Palm by Conner Flynn on June 7th, 2009

New Palm Pre owners report screen discolorationToday there are some reports from at least two Palm Pre forums of screen distortion affecting the recently launched Pre. Palm has yet to acknowledge the issue, but there’s a lot of discussion at the Precentral forums, where most of the affected users are reporting a similar circular distortion at the bottom of the Pre’s screen., While at the EverythingPre forums, there are similar complaints.

It seems like some Sprint stores are aware of the issue, and have been exchanging the handsets for new ones, if they have the stock. There is some photo “evidence”, some of it more compelling than others. Though some of the “distortion” has been ID’d by users as a normal part of the background design.

Is this the new iPhone? The big news this weekend may be all about Palm, but the Apple rumor mill is still going strong. This picture may or may not be the new iPhone set to drop on Monday.

It shows off a matte black casing with no chrome border, what could be a front-facing camera, and iPhone OS 3.0, which makes it sync up with what we’ve heard. It could be a photoshop job. At any rate, we will know the truth soon enough. Do you believe this?

The idea is that the phone itself has all of the bare necessities and when docked, it not only gets charged but will work as a portable music player as well, with built-in speakers. The end result is a phone that’s intuitive, functional and sleek.

Botropolis: This week in robots

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on June 5th, 2009

Botropolis: This week in robotsLook, we’ve brought on any robot apocalypse that we get. The more we keep building them in the now, the more we have to fight in the future. But it’s not like anyone heeds our warning over at Botropolis. Maybe humanity will start to pay attention when nursing home robots ram their cold steel fists up grandma and grandpa’s poop-shoots like a reverse dose of Ensure and put on their own puppet show. Or when your fancy new robot car turns into a trash compactor, kicking you out the door as a five inch bloody cube, with a line of similar cubes littering the highway. But until that day comes, all we can do is warn you. Anyhow, here’s some of what we covered this week.

iRobot: Roomba goes potty.

Power Mac G4: It puts itself away neatly.

Evolution: Robot style.

DIY PSP laptop mod

DIY PSP laptopSure, the PSP Go! looks awesome. It’s slimmer, lighter, has downloads instead of UMD. But where’s the full QWERTY keyboard? Acidmods forum member folklord36’s PSP Laptop does have QWERTY, thanks to an Xbox Chat Pad. It also has relocated speakers, LED lighting and more.

The screen section is a modified Joytech visor that has the same finish as the PSP, and its sturdy hinge can be positioned at anything up to 180-degrees. We don’t know how long it took him to create this or how much it cost, but we wouldn’t mind having one ourselves.

Acer’s first Android netbook will dual-boot Windows

Posted in Acer by Conner Flynn on June 5th, 2009

Acer's first Android netbook will dual-boot WindowsAccording to Acer chairman JT Wang, the first Android netbooks will ship with Windows in dual-boot configurations. If you wanted a clean break from windows with your new Acer netbook, looks like you are out of luck.

It’s actually a smart move by Acer, since Android is unproven as a netbook OS. The last thing they need is computers that surprise the consumer by crashing every ten minutes. However, this is not the android netbook that people want. Loading windows on alongside of Android just makes it a bit of a novelty.

e32009-sbBack in 2007, I went to E3 for the first time and it was a horrible show. I could have seen more new video games standing in the Best Buy game isle than were on display that year. Thankfully, E3 went back to the much larger format for 2009 that it used years ago and it seems the show was a success again.

According to the Entertainment Software Association, the group that puts on the E3 Expo each year, 2009 was a success. The show had over 41,000 attendees from 78 different countries and had 216 exhibitors. The best news was that the booth babes were back at the show this year.

Maingear Pulse is world’s greenest gaming PC

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on June 5th, 2009

maingearpulse-sbOne thing that most gaming PCs have in common is that they pack the highest performance parts they can get their hands on into a rig that sucks down power like a Hummer slurps fuel. With more people looking to go green, I guess it was inevitable that a green gaming rig was launched.

Maingear has announced the Pulse gaming PC, which it claims to be the world’s greenest gaming PC. The rig is based on the NVIDIA Ion platform and it is also the world’s first upgradable Ion PC. The small form factor machine can be upgraded from Ion graphics to an NVIDIA 9800 ECO video card that needs 40% less power than a typical 9800 GT requires.
