Zune HD: The first device to use NVIDIA Tegra

Posted in Zune HD by Conner Flynn on June 17th, 2009

Microsoft Zune HDIt’s official. Zune HD will be powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra processor, making it the first PMP in the world that can claim that honor. NVIDIA confirmed it themselves. The all-in-one processor offers hardware acceleration of video and can consume just 150mW of power at full speed, giving it a battery life like a regular media player in spite of the demands of 720p video playback.

The new Zune is likely using an APX 2500 or 2600 processor, which combines an ARM11 processor with a GeForce-based graphics core and controllers for memory and output. It has just enough performance to display 720p at full resolution when using HDMI and also supports 3D rendering performance much faster than most handheld devices.

Xbox 360 Hellboy case modThis Hellboy Xbox 360 case mod is awesome. And very very red. It was made by Frank Gonzales, who has previously created a Gears of War and other case mods. He really outdid himself with this one. It looks as if it has just clawed it’s way free from hell and is ready for some serious gaming.

My first reaction upon seeing this was to wonder where the horns were, but it is absolutely perfect as it is.

The device has a few touchscreen displays, one in the standard format, the other is a flexible OLED display that can stiffen when a low voltage charge goes through it, to give you added viewing area.

Cyber Coin Assist for the DS

Posted in Nintendo DS by Conner Flynn on June 17th, 2009

Cyber Coin Assist for the DSI don’t know about you, but I’ve never had a problem using the Nintendo DS’ D-pad. Apparently some people do, since this gadget now exists. Most people who play the DS Lite won’t find the Cyber Coin Assist necessary. There may however be a few out there who need the extra thumb support.

For those people, putting the Cyber Coin Assist over the D-pad may just make their portable gaming more enjoyable. We don’t have any info on pricing, but it should be out later this July. I’m saying right now that if people are willing to pay more than $2, I’d be really surprised.

Amazon releases Kindle source code to the world

Posted in kindle by Conner Flynn on June 17th, 2009

Amazon releases Kindle source code to the worldJeff Bezos wants the Kindle to have some healthy competition. That’s why Amazon just released their source code for all the Kindle devices. It’s basic Linux underneath (kernel 2.6.22 on the latest 2.1 software), but includes E Ink drivers and other hardware support.

We don’t know whether Amazon stripped out its various DRM and licensed codec support, MP3 and Audible seem very likely candidates for explosion, even if turns out Amazon did leave in its own Kindle Book DRM. Hopefully manufacturers can take and repurpose this code to build their own Kindle clone.

Logitech Vid makes video calls easy

Posted in Logitech by Shane McGlaun on June 17th, 2009

logitechvid-sbI usually only have to travel once or so each year for work. Typically, it’s for CES in January and while it’s nice to be away from things for a while, my kids get restless. I usually end up doing some video calls with them from my computer so I can see what they are up to. The problem is that video calls over IM applications can be hard to set up.

Logitech has announced a new software platform today called Vid that makes it easy to initiate video calls to and from anyone using a Logitech webcam. The software itself is free and Logitech claims that you can set up the software and initiate calls easier than using an IM application.

SKYlaser Power Adjustable Laser Review

Posted in Review by Darrin Olson on June 16th, 2009

SKYlaser adjustable power laserThe guys over at SKYlaser gave us the opportunity recently to check out there version of a 150mW green laser pointer with a unique adjustable power feature. We’ve reviewed a number of types of lasers and laser pointers here on the ‘Brick but this is the first we’ve gotten our hands on one that has this type of adjustable power.

The nice thing about getting a powerful laser of this caliber is just that; it’s powerful. This laser has enough oomph to put a green dot on something from pretty much as far away as you can see, and that’s during the day. At night it makes a seemingly unending saber-like beam of green laser light visible for miles.
