Xbox 360 motion-sensing tech really ZCam’s system?

Xbox 360 motion-sensing tech really ZCam's system? The other day we told you about the rumors about Microsoft’s Wii-killing, motion-sensing Xbox 360 add-on set to debut at E3. Well, now Ars Technica thinks they’ve played with it a full year ago. Ars thinks that the new Xbox 360 motion sensing system is based on the ZCam 3D camera, made by a company that was later purchased by Microsoft.

If true, it sounds good. Ars was impressed with the tech when they got a hands-on with it back in January of 2008. And Microsoft has had a long time to work with it, so chances are it’s even better now. It makes sense to us, but we’ll have to wait and see what’s what when E3 arrives next month.

Gmail pushed to select BlackBerrys

Gmail pushed to select BlackBerrysOn the heels of RIM adding a push API, Google is enabling some BlackBerry users to get their Gmail and Google Calendar stuff on their handsets. Don’t jump for joy just yet. There are some shortcomings that limit its usefulness. Like the fact that users have to be connecting to BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances, and those instances have to be backed by Microsoft Exchange.

Also, only 250 users per Enterprise Server instance can get their mobile Gmail on, changes made to appointments on a handset cannot be pushed back to Google Calendar. Plus, searching for Gmail messages still requires a separate app. Updates and improvements are on the way, but until then this is what you get.

Egg printer makes the best Easter eggsIf you’re getting bored with eating eggs, why not spice things up with this fancy egg printer. Those plain white shells will soon be festive. The Egg Drawer puts pretty pictures on that incredible edible canvas.

With this and the Scan Toaster, your entire breakfast can be a work of art. Sadly, we can’t find any details for this thing, just the Flickr photostream. We need more of these by Easter next year. Looks like you can swap out any color marker for another.

Supermicro crams Intel Atom processors inside low-power servers

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on May 5th, 2009

supermicroatomserver-sbTypically when you think about a server you think about massive, power gulping machines with lots of performance packed with multiple CPUs and lots of RAM. Some applications don’t need all that power though and would work just as well on lower performance servers optimized for power savings.

Supermicro has announced a pair of new servers to suit the low performance, low power needs in the datacenter. The servers are both based on the Intel Atom processor and the most efficient of the pair needs 4W of power while the higher performance server needs 8W.

citycouncil3050-sbWhen Microsoft launched its Zune DAP it hoped that the device would dethrone Apple as the leader in the digital music category. That failed to happen and Microsoft languishes in third spot in sales behind Apple and SanDisk.

Microsoft has announced a new exclusive animated series for the Zune that the software giant hopes will lure digital content fans to the Zune platform. The series is called City Council 3050 AD and the pilot episode will debut in Seattle later this month.

EA has announced that it is moving the launch date for the next Tiger Woods gamed called Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10. The launch date has been moved up by one week to June 8 for the golf game and the Grand Slam Tennis for Wii will be launched at the same time.

RealD announces RealD LP accessory for 3D ready projectors

Posted in Home Theater by Shane McGlaun on May 5th, 2009

reald-logo-sbI have seen several of the new breed of 3D films at the theater over the last year. The most recent was the Aliens vs. Monsters flick that used RealD technology for all the 3D goodness the film offered. I will be happy when 3D finally comes affordably to the living room so I can watch my favorite shows in 3D.

RealD has announced today a new accessory for 3D ready projectors that is design for use in the home or office on screens up to 17-feet across. The accessory is called the RealD LP and promises to bring the 3D quality from the local cinema to small venues like conference rooms and other places.

“Alien skull” spotted on Mars

Posted in Humor by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2009

"Alien skull" spotted on Mars NASA beamed back home some satellite images from mars. One of those images features an oddly shaped space boulder which appears to have eye sockets and a nose. So people are saying it’s a Martial skull. Further speculation shows that the skull is 15 cms with binocular eyes 5 cm apart. Also, the cranial capacity is estimated to be at 1400 cc.

There also appears to be a narrow pointed small mouth leading one to believe that this creature could be carnivorous also. We did some investigation of our own. Our findings are below.

Resident Evil 5 for the PC will be 3D

Resident Evil 5 for the PC will be 3DLike so many things, the 3D phenomenon hits in 30 year cycles. It was big in the 1950s, had a brief and crappy resurgence in the 1980s and thirty years later here it is again. It’s not just movies. It’s our games as well.

Thanks to NVIDIA and Resident Evil 5, we may actually have something 3D to genuinely look forward to. It has been confirmed that when Resident Evil 5 hits PCs this July it will feature support for NVIDIA’s GeForce 3D Vision Technology.

Radio Valerie has sleek curves, smokes an antenna

Radio Valerie has sleek curves, smokes an an antennaRadio Valerie, designed by Valentin Vodev, is a radio concept that is at the same time sultry and silly. Sultry thanks to it’s curves, silly because I swear it looks like this thing is smoking an antenna or has an antenna thermometer.

You can fully control the radio without having using buttons or switches, since the antenna acts as your control stick to find stations, and a speaker up top can be turned to control the volume. I don’t know, it looks like a dancing cigarette butt.

Thanko’s Lazy Mouse 2

Posted in Mouse by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2009

Thanko's Lazy Mouse 2Thanko has a new and interesting gadget they’ve just introduced, in the Lazy Mouse 2, aka the GoroNeDeMouse2. It’s small enough to operate your computer like a wireless mouse. Is it lazy? For some people, this might be far easier. Especially if desk space is an issue.

The Lazy Mouse 2 is compatible with both Windows and Mac, but sadly the built-in rechargeable battery has just 4 hours of life. I’m curious. How many of you think this is an amazing idea? And how many think it’s a waste of $50?

HyperMac lives up to it’s name, powers MacBooks for 32 hours

Posted in MacBook by Conner Flynn on May 4th, 2009

HyperMac lives up to it's name, powers MacBooks for 32 hoursSanho’s Hypermac amounts to little more than a large external battery pack. Sure, it’s a great idea. And who wouldn’t want that kind of performance from a battery? We’re talking 32 hours here. That’s more than a full day.

But seriously, most of us have an outlet handy which is far less painful than dropping $500 on this 222Wh unit. But if this appeals to your need for power, it ships later this month. But ask yourself this. Do you even use your MacBook for 32 hours straight? Have you ever?
