Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on May 7th, 2009

The Fukitorimushia floor-cleaning robot wipes instead of vacuums, like an inchworm with a cylon eye. Designed by Panasonic, the little robot is wrapped in a nanocloth sleeve, which collects dust and debris as the robot crawls, worm-style, across your floor.

Yes, what we have here is the swiffer evolved. Its also has sensors to seek out dirt, so it will focus on problem areas first, then move on the assorted crumbs. Nothing on price or availability yet.

Sony prepping Alpha A230, A330, A380 SLRsSony is preparing not one, not two, but three entry-level Alpha digital SLRs for a launch in the near future. A drop-down menu on the company’s UK support page gives it away, revealing the A330 and two lenses (50mm and 18-55mm) when choosing from cameras, plus an analyst’s Twitter update has also revealed the existence of the A230 and the A380. No details about either of these cameras.

Apparently the models are all direct upgrades to the A200, A300 and A350. The A200 and A300 have been entry-level models with fixed (A200) and swivel (A300) LCDs with 10.2-megapixel sensors and live view on the A300. The A350 has largely been a higher-resolution version of the A300.

Posted in Palm by Conner Flynn on May 7th, 2009

Palm Pre launch on June 5th?So when will the Palm Pre be launched? We already have a few dates floating around, and you can now add this new picture showing a Palm Pre “launch lunch” on June 5th to your calendar. So, is this info legit? We aren’t sure. Even the best of them can mis-type “Employee Benfits”.

What do you guys think? The real deal? This could mean that they’re prepping for a June 7 retail launch, which would line up with the Best Buy rumor. Or it could just be an imaginary lunch with a bunch of stuffed animals and tea in small cups.

Xerox launches solid-ink color printer

Posted in Printers by Conner Flynn on May 7th, 2009

Xerox launches solid-ink color printerXerox’s new ColorQube printer promises to revolutionize color-printing using a wax ink. The ink can reduce the cost per page by as much as 62%. This new ink doesn’t sacrifice any printer functions either. Like other multi-function printers, the ColorQube can print, copy, scan and fax and be networked by several people.

So how does it work? The ink is melted and sprayed onto a spinning drum which deposits it on the page. Don’t get too excited. The machine costs $20,000. But as the technology progresses it will get cheaper over time. And even at that price huge companies could see a long term savings in cost.

Altec Lansing IMT237-Orbit MP3 Portable Audio SpeakerAltec Lansing has introduced their IMT237-Orbit MP3 portable audio speaker in Korea. It’s powered by 3 AAA batteries that will give you up to 24 hours of non-stop audio playback.

All I ask is that you have good taste in music if you absolutely have to use this in public with your portable media player or notebook. We don’t know what kind of power the speaker has, but obviously it won’t be damaging many eardrums.

Shinoda flexible display

Posted in Television by Conner Flynn on May 7th, 2009

Shinoda flexible displayThe Shinoda flexible display is a unique display that is capable of High Definition video despite its curved shape. This is possible thanks to its underlying plasma tube (PTA) technology and the intricate stitching of panels together to form a nearly seamless 3:2 display, making it possible to reach the 720p vertical resolution.

The Shinoda flexible weighs just 16 pounds and they are very close to mass producing such panels. So hopefully we will be seeing these in homes very soon.

Garmin Oregon GPS adds camera

Posted in Garmin by Shane McGlaun on May 7th, 2009

garmin-logo-sbGPS is becoming so common that even people who don’t really need one are getting them. Last time I saw my grandmother she had a GPS in the car. This is the same woman who goes nowhere she hasn’t been going for the last 30 years and is so cheap she washes paper plates. GPS has gone mainstream for sure.

Gamin has introduced new GPS units called the Oregon 550 and Oregon 550t. Both of the devices integrate a 3.2-megapixel camera that can geotag images and a 3-axis compass. The devices are designed to be carried on outdoor excursions rather than mounted in car.

Blockbuster survey finds most popular sci-fi characters

Posted in Sci-Fi by Shane McGlaun on May 7th, 2009

fireflytv-sbI am a big sci-fi fan. Not one of the rabid types mind you that wear costumes and goes to conventions, but I like to watch sci-fi films and read sci-fi books. All sci-fi fans have their favorite characters and many of the favorites are classic characters we can all agree on.

Blockbuster has surveyed sci-fi fans to come up with top five lists for best starship captain, best villain, hottest male sci-fi star, and hottest female sci-fi star. The top five captains in order are Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly, James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, Han Solo, and William Adama. Picard so should have been number one.

Last photos of Marilyn Monroe on auction at eBay

Posted in eBay by Shane McGlaun on May 7th, 2009

mornoepic-sbI’m not the classic movie and old music kind of guy. As classic as I want to go are films from my childhood like Star Wars and Goonies. I never really understood the allure of old Hollywood types like Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, but to some these types of old school stars are legends.

Everyone knows about the tragic and untimely death of Monroe. Some of the last known photos of the star are up for auction on eBay and were taken only five days before her death. The photos come from the collection of musician Buddy Greco.

You Rock guitar to debut at E3 in June

Posted in Controllers,Games by Shane McGlaun on May 7th, 2009

yourockguitar-sbBack in 2007, I went to E3 for the first time. 2007 happened to be the first year of the much smaller E3 show and it sucked so badly I never went back. E3 is going back to the massive show that gamers loved for so many years for 2009 and new games and products galore should be unveiled at the show.

One of the products debuting at E3 will be the You Rock Guitar. Right now, all we have are a few details, exactly what the guitar looks like won’t be known until E3 kicks off and the product is unveiled. What we do know is that the guitar will work for all major consoles and can connect to a PC as well.
