As a British expat living in the US i was amazed at the lack of a standard single cable AV solution. I grew up with SCART ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCART ) and was used to the idea that high quality audio and video could be carried on a single cable. It also meant that the DVDs I watched in the UK seemed considerably sharper, and higher quality than those watched over composite in the US. Still surprised by the fuss about HDMI.
