Epson announces new printers on the cheap

epsonnx515-sbOne of the big problems with printers today isn’t that they print too slowly or that they can’t print images. The big problem is the cost of the printer and ink. Often you can replace your whole printer for the price you pay for new ink cartridges alone. I once owned a printer that cost about $50 to replace the ink tanks.

Epson has announced a new line of all-in-one printers called the NX series that offers nice features at low prices. All of the printers will copy, scan, and print. The line all use Epson DURABrite inks as well. The line includes the NX115, NX215, NX415, and NX515 models.

The 115 sells for $69.99, 215 for $89.99, 415 for $99.99, and the 515 goes for $149.99. The NX215 is the lowest cost printer in the industry to offer a 1.5-inch color screen and memory card slots. The NX415 features a 2.5-inch screen, the largest screen in its price class and has PictBridge support. The high-end NX-515 is the fastest printer in its class and features Wi-Fi printing capability. All the printers will be available in June.

You mentioned in the article that the cartridges can sometimes cost more than the printer itself, yet you didn’t find out what the cartridges for the new printer cost. Epson has went from a brand of good quality and low cost, to one that is good quality with high cost. I recommend people skip Epson and look at Brother, Canon, or HP. Better quality and lower cost printer cartridges. The cheaper the printer, the more costly the cartridges are to own.

Since your article didn’t do it, I did. The Epson NX115 takes the 69 series of cartridges. One full set of cartridges cost $54.03 plus taxes. You can also get the lower yielding 88 series for $37.98. The NX215 will take the higher yield 68 Black ($19.99 each), the NX415 takes the 69′s and the NX515 takes the 97 black cartridge. I still recommend to stay away from them.

By the way, the nx415 will use the higher capacity 68 series black cartridge, same as the 69, but more ink. The 68 series also includes color cartridges, but the nx415 is programmed not to use them. Same cartridge as the 69s, only more ink, but the printer refuses to acknowledge them as proper cartridge. Sounds like marketing screwing the customer again. If you want to use the same cartridge in high capacity, then you must buy the next higher printer.

Epson’s cartridges cost more than the printer for replacement. Not a good value for that reason. If they would ever get smart enough to produce reasonably priced cartridges, it would be a great deal. I own a 415 series. Great printer, but I can’t afford the ink. My next printer will be a Kodak.
