Posted in Archos by Conner Flynn on April 6th, 2009

Archos 2 and 4 players leakArchos hasn’t said anything official yet, but there are leaks of the Archos 2 and 4 players, with the Archos 2 listed on Amazon. Don’t expect anything too Earth shattering here. They’re just another alternative to what the company already offers.

For $60 you’ll get 8GB of internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, 1.8″ display at 128 x 160 resolution and voice recording capability. Not bad for the price. The 16GB model will cost you more of course. We don’t know much about the Archos 4. Just that it has a 4″ display and up to 32GB of internal flash memory.

OMG! Netflix Streamed Kenny!

southpark-sbI used Netflix for a while before I realized getting a new movie the day it comes out is about likely as a perfect credit score in today’s economy. It would take weeks to get a new film and by the time it was finally available I would have rented it at my local movie store anyway.

When Netflix started offering streaming movies and TV shows with its subscriptions things got a bit more interesting. Netflix and MTV Networks announced today that they would be streaming popular programs including South Park from Comedy Central.

aquasounder-sbSummer is almost here in many areas. Spring may have only just officially begun, but in the south, the summer heat will be here in mere weeks. That means that many people are already getting their swimming pools ready for the summer.

If you are looking for a way to get some music outside during your pool party without risking shock or frying your MP3 player Grace Audio has a new waterproof speaker system that is pretty slick called the Aqua Sounder wireless speaker. The Aqua Sounder is a round orb speaker that floats on the surface of the water pumping out the tunes from a wireless transmitter up to 150 feet away.

Fast & Furious game hits iPhone to tie-in with the movie

Posted in Games by Shane McGlaun on April 6th, 2009

fastfurious-sbI really liked the first Fast & Furious movie with all the cool cars and racing action. The second and third films in the franchise left a bit to be desired, well OK a lot to be desired. The fourth film in the franchise hit theaters over the weekend and as expected video games based on the film are available as well.

A company called iPlay has announced a new game for the iPhone, the sixth Fast & Furious game for the iPhone and iPod touch. The game is available in the iTunes store now for $5.99 and offers social networking and connectivity features. Players can upload their fastest races to YouTube for inclusion in global leader boards. The graphics are high resolution and controls use the accelerometer.

Samsung announces monitor bezels so thin Paris Hilton is jealous

Posted in Samsung by Shane McGlaun on April 6th, 2009

samsungthinbezel-sbAnyone who has tried to use multiple monitors for watching video or playing PC games knows that the bezel around the screens causes a big problem. On your average computer monitor that means about an inch gap between the two screens and you lose images right in front of your face.

Samsung has announced new large format monitors for applications like video walls that offer the world’s narrowest bezel technology. The new monitors include the 460UT, 460UTn, and the 460UTn-UD. The screens all have the same bezel size with a thickness of 2.4mm on the right and bottom and 4.3mm on the left and top for a total thickness when joined of 7.3mm.

FanSee: A fan that displays the digital temperature

FanSee: A fan that displays the digital temperatureThe FanSee is a nice innovation on the standard desk fan. Thanks to LEDs built right into the fan blades, the FanSee gives you the current temperature while the blades are spinning. That’s right! Feel the oppressive heat, turn on the fan, and let it tell you what you already know. That it’s damn hot. That’s why you turned the fan on.

So, it’s a device that states the obvious. The temperature readout on the 9 inch diameter fan blades is large enough so that the whole room can see it. If you absolutely need this in your life, it can be had for $39.99.

It comes with an integral speaker so you can listen while you are transferring. It will cost you $119.95. But hey, it’s worth it to hear your old music again. Once you get them all transferred, you can toss all those old tapes for good.

MIT working on Virus powered batteries

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on April 5th, 2009

MIT working on Virus powered batteries Typically a battery functions with lithium ions flowing between a negatively charged anode, usually graphite, and the positively charged cathode, usually cobalt oxide or lithium iron phosphate. But three years ago, an MIT team reported that it had engineered viruses that could build an anode by coating themselves with cobalt oxide and gold and self-assembling to form a nanowire. The “virus batteries” have the energy capacity and power performance similar to rechargeable batteries.

The prototype battery is a coin battery, but the idea is that cell and larger batteries could be made from this process and that one day it will power cars, boats and everything else. As it stands right now, it can go at least 100 charges before performance goes down. That will change of course.

Ribbit MP3 player from Toys R Us

Posted in MP3 by Conner Flynn on April 5th, 2009

Ribbit MP3 player from Toys R UsWell, this is certainly the strangest MP3 player we’ve seen this week. Too bad they didn’t go all Kermit the Frog with this guy. They may have actually sold more. The Toys R Us ‘Ribbit’ MP3 player comes with five play modes (normal, repeat one, repeat all, folder, repeat folder). And an eight-mode equalizer.(normal, rock, pop, classical, bass, jazz, soft, and SRS WOW)

It also sports a high-speed USB 2.0 interface, play-list function, and support for seven languages. A built-in rechargeable Lithium Ion battery is the power source. Not bugs. You’ll get up to six hours of continuous playback with a fully charged battery.

INCHworm shoe grows with your feet

Posted in Foot Apparel by Conner Flynn on April 5th, 2009

INCHworm shoe grows with your feetIt’s a common parental problem. Your kid asking for a new pair of shoes every few months, because he has outgrown the old ones. Expensive too. You could take a cue from China and their women, and force your child’s feet to remain small forever by cramming them into a tiny shoe, but that only gets child services involved.

These shoes grow with the growing foot size of your child. Dubbed the INCHworm, they use iFit technology, with accordion-like material on the toe. With the press of a button it can be pulled out to increase the length of the shoe in ½ size increments up to 3 full sizes. Pretty sweet huh? It’s designed tough so all those days at the playground won’t destroy them.

Tokyoflash unveils new desktop clocks

Tokyoflash unveils new desktop clocksTokyoflash, known for its retro and futuristic watches, has its sights on making your desktop look more like a UFO. They have nine clock designs, all pretty wild in their own way, and they need your help. You can help decide which one should become an actual clock.

One looks like a boomerang, another resembles a cool lamp shade. The one above looks like something from Star Trek The Next Generation. How about a UFO? They’re all pretty wild and wacky. And as usual some seem indecipherable at first.

Turn your iPhone into a document scanner

Turn your iPhone into a document scannerThis simple cardboard stand makes capturing document images with your iPhone super easy. Typically if you try to scan a document by holding your phone, what you will get is a blurry image. This is a simple and low-tech solution.

The stand/dock was created by University of Cincinnati DAAP student Kyle A Koch. It holds the phone and the document in the perfect position to get a good picture. Like all good cardboard things, it arrives to you flat packed for just $16. Not bad.
