applexserveThe Apple Store was down for a while this morning, which we all know means new items are being added. If you had your hopes up for something really cool like a new iPhone or netbook, then you are going to be disappointed.

Apple announced that it has updated its Xserve server calling it the fastest and most energy-efficient Xserve ever. The Xserve now uses next gen quad-core Intel Xeon processors and has a greener design that delivers 89% better performance per watt and eliminates PVC and BFRs.

That last bit will make Greenpeace happy for sure. The machine now has a 128GB SSD boot drive option and up to 3TB of internal storage and RAID 5 support. The server also includes unlimited client license for Mac OS X Server working with Mac, Windows, and Linux clients. Prices for the newly updated Xserve start at $2999.
