GPS devices are becoming very common for not only automotive use, but for those needing directions when walking or riding a bike. Garmin is one of the biggest names in GPS navigation and the company announced several new GPS models at CeBIT 2009 in Germany today.

The new models are in the nuvi 1200 and 1300 families and all offer thin profiles with the ability to give directions when driving or walking. One new feature of all the devices is optional CityXplorer maps that are available for select tourist destinations around the globe.

AMD and NVIDIA are the only two companies for most consumers in the discrete video card industry. The two firms are always battling for the superior products in the market place. Over the last few years, NVIDIA has been the more dominant firm in performance, but ATI has scored a few wins, especially with its newer high-end video cards.

Yesterday AMD officially confirmed rumors that were floating around claiming that it would be dropping the price on two of its most popular video cards. Specifically the price is dropping on the Radeon 4850, 4870 512MB, and the 4870 1GB cards.

The netbook has turned out to be one of the most popular computer classes available. During the global economic downturn, consumers are buying netbooks in increasing numbers to save money. The little machines are more than just cheap computers; they also offer very portable designs that are great for working on the road.

One thing that many netbook users do is upgrade the RAM in their machines .Typically netbooks only come with 1GB of RAM and Kingston has announced a new 2GB SO-DIMM designed specifically for netbooks that support 533MHz memory.

ASUS has us doing a triple take with its new Lamborghini VX5 laptop. The machine will sport a 1TB SSD, a Core 2 Quad CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 16-inch “Full HD” display.

You’ll also get a GeForce GT 130M graphics card with 1GB of GDDR3 memory, an illuminated “chiclet” style keyboard and a Blu-ray optical drive. It’s for those of us who don’t care about laptops with an astronomical price tag obviously, though the MSRP is yet to be announced.

In case you haven’t noticed there’s a new Trek movie that seems to resemble 90210 or One Tree Hill. Before you see it, you’re going to want to brush up on your geek knowledge with this 20 Questions Star Trek Edition Game. It will let you test your Star Trek knowledge with the typical 20 questions gameplay.

This version just happens to look like the Enterprise. So when you tire of it after 20 seconds, you can display it proudly on your desk next to your other Federation and Non-Federation ships.

Here’s a new USB memory card reader from Buffalo that looks nice and offers a faster transfer rate.

The BSCRA49U2 Turbo USB memory Card reader is a 49 in 1 card reader that offers UDMA 8bit High-Speed transfer rate. Pricing and other specs are still unknown, but it obviously comes in four colors.

German watchmakers Retrowerk have introduced a new range of Steampunk watches. While they don’t shout Steampunk at the top of their lungs, they sort of raise their voice as it were.

They sport the usual Steampunk design cues, like pistons, cogs, gears, revolving jump hour discs and so on. They’re a tad more affordable than most high-end watches, priced between $429 to $1098. Handlebar mustache and bowler hat not required, but they help.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have created what they are calling a “magic mirror”. It shows you your muscular activity in real time so you can visually see how hard your muscles are working while you exercise. The system can currently monitor the activity of 30% of the body’s 300-some skeletal muscles.

Sadly the user has to wear all of those little balls etc, to get the readings. At the moment it’s a medical device, so it won’t be showing up at the gym anytime soon or on Wii-Fit. But one day soon you’ll be using your mirror as an actual health device. Not just a surface for your popped zit juice.

You may have noticed that it’s difficult to find arcades these days, no matter how many hours you drive around blasting some Loverboy or Huey Lewis and the News. It ain’t the 80s. What’s a Pinball enthusiast to do? You make some killer pinball games yourself, that’s what!

Take one BadBoyBill, who happens to be the admin of the HyperSpin forums. He used an HDTV, an LCD monitor and a 3D pinball program to build his own 1080p pinball machine. Oh yeah. Now you’re drooling and thinking back to those days at the arcade. The cabinet he created recreates the whole pinball experience and he can play any game he wants on the same machine. That is genius. Absolute genius.

Samsung’s new value priced Blu-ray player has been overlooked in favor of other better equipped players, but that doesn’t mean it’s not out there and being spotted at retail stores. This one was spotted on a Best Buy shelf.

Supposedly Blu-ray player prices will be dropping across the board, and it looks like Samsung is positioning the BD-P1600 as one of their lower-end models. $300 may not be dirt cheap but Netflix subscribers will probably like the unit. However wireless networking requires purchasing a Samsung USB accessory that isn’t released yet and BD Live requires at least 1GB of external storage.

Following up on their CurrenKey ultraportable flash drives, Lacie has a new storage solution that will have you losing even more keys then you already do. This one takes the form factor of…keys.

These miniature microSD card readers offer 20MB/s read and 10MB/s write speeds. PassKey supports microSDHC cards, and both iamaKey and itsaKey are avaialable with 4GB or 8GB of built-in storage. It won’t start your car or get you into your home, but it may still scratch a lottery ticket and they are shock-proof and Windows ReadyBoost-compatible.

This robotic crawler will soon to be inducted in Yokohama’s fire department. It’s designed to carry a human from the disaster zone to safety. In an earthquake rescue workers can load an injured person in the crawler and that person will be carried from the site to relief operations. It has four wheel belts and can easily move over rubble and other obstacles.

The all new FineDrive iQ500 personal navigation system is powered by an ARM11 600MHz CPU with either 4 or 8GB (SD Card) of memory and support for SDHC cards (up to 32GB).

This gadget also offers a 7 inch (800×480) touchscreen display, Windows Embedded CE 6.0, DMB TV Tuner, and a PMP. The device weighs 370grams and measures 186mm x 120mm x 24mm. The FineDrive iQ500 is currently available only in Korea. No word on when or if it will come to the US.

Motherboards are always cool to look at, but soon Asus will be rolling out a brand new Marine Cool concept motherboard that is truly a sight to behold. The board will target hard core gamers and one of the main features is a brand new backplate with “micro-porous ceramic” technology, which is said to deliver quicker heat dissipation while improving the structural integrity of the board.

What this means is a better ability in handling overclocking, which gamers will love. The motherboard will also use a couple of SO-DIMM memory slots to save space for other components.
