Nuclear Doorbell could get annoying

Posted in Home by Conner Flynn on March 6th, 2009

Nuclear Doorbell could get annoyingMost of us are happy with the typical doorbell. But there are others who are looking for something a bit more dramatic. The Nuclear Doorbell should do the trick. No old school ding-dong ring here. Instead, at the push of its wireless button it will produce sounds that could wake up the dead, as it blinks its lights while loudly announcing visitors.

Experience such sounds as a droning klaxon and a voice acted script to let you know that somebody’s at the door. Check out the video below before you decide on your purchase. We have a feeling you might change your mind.

Oracom A10 Portable Media PlayerCeBIT 2009 saw the unveiling of the A10 portable media player from Oracom. It will do just about all of the things that other PMPs can, but most of the functions can be controlled via the touchscreen display.

The device supports a wide range of various audio and video formats, line-in/FM/voice recording, text and voice memos and an integrated FM radio chipset with 50 pre-set stations and pre-scheduled recording support. We don’t know when this will be released or for how much, but its all ready to take its place as another run-of-the-mill PMP.

Huge remote control gets you off the couch

Huge remote control gets you off the couchDo you want a remote that will get you off your butt and help you shed some of those couch potato pounds? Here’s just the thing. Change the channel like playing DDR. Some creative guy with dreams of a huge remote saw an over-sized novelty remote at Brookstone and it was destiny.

He stitcheed together two PS2 Dance Dance Revolution mats, a PS2-to-PC controller converter box, and some homebrew source code. It works, but I think I’ll stick with the palm sized version. This would however be a great preventative device for those people who get so obese that they need a crane to break their wall and take them to the hospital. Video below.

MacBook Pro Graphics IssueIt wasn’t long ago that some NVIDIA notebook GPUs began failing that were used in many notebook computers from Dell and Apple among others. The GPU failures ultimately led to a lawsuit being filed against NVIDIA by some affected notebook owners.

A number of threads on the Apple support site are reporting new graphics errors on new 17-inch MacBook Pro notebooks that feature NVIDIA 9400M and 9600M GPUs. According to reports, the notebook graphics are fine as long as only the 9400m is used.

According to research firm IDC, the computer market is in for a big loss in 2009 as PC shipments are expected to drop 4.5% for the year. The company reports that shipment sin Q4 2008 dropped 1.9% in what is traditionally a big shopping season.

Palm Treo ProWhen the PDA was the popular gadget to have, Palm was one of the most popular electronics makers around. After the demise of the PDA and the rise of the smartphone, Palm jumped into the smartphone business, but never proved as popular in the phone market as it was in the PDA realm with most users. Today Palm offers a line of smartphones including the Treo Pro that offer nice features.

Alltel Wireless has announced that it is now offering the Treo Pro smartphone as of today online and in retail stores. Alltel has beat Sprint to the punch with the Treo Pro, Sprint isn’t launching the smartphone until March 15.

Circuit City stores have their last weekend hurrah

Posted in circuit city by Shane McGlaun on March 6th, 2009

Circuit CityThere was once a time when if you wanted something electronic you went to either Circuit City or Best Buy in many areas. The two stores were among the top electronics retailers in the country. The same can’t be said any more. Today Best Buy is strong, and Walmart is picking up steam in the electronics market and Circuit City is a ghost of its former self.

Circuit City went under this year and since January liquidation firms have been running sales to move the left over inventory that the electronics firm was unable to sell before going out of business. According to the firms behind the liquidation events, all of the Circuit city locations will close March 8.

An actual nice looking iPod dock? Seems too good to be true. Let the cries of “photoshopped!” begin. The device also features touch panel controls, a 3.5mm audio-in jack, bass/treble adjustments, AM/FM radio and a remote. We don’t have a release date or price, but Sony Insider is guessing $150-$250.

Thanko pen reads 4 SD cards simultaneouslyThanko has released a new four-slot USB SD card reader in the form of a pen. I’m not sure what situation would arise where you would need to read four different SD cards at the same time, but if it happens you are covered.

The SD4PEN can read four SD or SDHC cards (up to 16GB) as well as let you write all of the usual mundane things you write throughout the course of your day. Nothing on pricing yet or a release date, but we’re sure it will be soon. I mean you need another pen and you’ve got SD cards. You need this.

Philips GoGear Spark PMPs with OLED display

Posted in Portable Meda Players by Conner Flynn on March 5th, 2009

Philips GoGear Spark PMPs with OLED displayPhilips has dropped a new range of super-compact PMPs, the Philips GoGear Spark. What a go-getter of a name. I can almost see some cartoon anime kid gripping the device and shouting PHILIPS…GOGEAR…SPARK in order to summon some demon. But other then that the name really doesn’t do much for me. It measures 41 x 41 x 15 mm and features an OLED display. The new PMPs are available in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacities, with optional FM tuners.

The OLED display measures 1.46-inches and comes in at 128 x 128 resolution. The PMP itself will play MP3, WMA and WAV files together with displaying JPEG images, but there’s no video playback support. Are you surprised? Video on a 1.46 inch screen would have you wearing coke bottle glasses in no time.

Cool8800C flip-phone with gaming controls

Cool8800C flip-phone with gaming controlsUsable gaming controls on a name brand phone? No. Usable game controls on a not-so-name-brand phone. The Cool8800C handset from Solomobi looks like a typical Chinese phone, but has a few nice features that might make you consider a purchase. It supports dual-SIM cards, has an analog TV tuner and other features you’d expect in a new cellphone.

What really makes this one stand out is the flip out screen and keypad that reveals another larger screen underneath along with gaming controls. It only plays classic NES titles though and comes with 3 built-in. If you want more you can load them with a memory card.

Recycled Shopping Cart chairs

Posted in Furniture by Conner Flynn on March 5th, 2009

Recycled Shopping Cart chairsWhat could be more comfortable than a chair that reminds you that you need to go buy groceries? Just about everything probably. Such a chair would force you to say stupid things when you spill stuff, like, “Clean up on isle me”. Sadly these chairs no longer have the squeaky and out of alignment wheels. So doing living room stunts is out of the question. Too bad. That’s a deal-breaker for me.

Max McMurdo takes carts that are landfill bound and turns them into chairs. If you ask me they make good patio pieces. If grocery shopping is your bag. Get it. Bag…Paper or plastic?

VR headset mimics all five senses

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on March 5th, 2009

VR headset mimics all five sensesWhat you are looking at in the pic above is a virtual reality helmet that recreates sights, smells, sounds and even tastes from far-flung destinations. Created by British scientists, the device will allow users a life-like experience of places such as Kenya’s Masai Mara while never leaving home. You could greet friends and family on the other side of the world as though they were present in the same room. Previously, scientists have only had success with virtual reality technology recreating sound and vision. This helmet named the Virtual Cocoon could change all that.

The prototype helmet connects wirelessly to a computer which feeds information about a virtual world or another part of the real world. It features a high definition high dynamic screen that produces pictures ten times darker, or 30 times brighter than the conventional television. A tube is connected to a box of chemicals which releases smells under the wearer’s nose, while a similar device can spray flavors directly into the mouth and provide a texture of sensation.

Resident Evil / Red Cross blood drive

Resident Evil / Red Cross blood driveDon’t get too excited, this isn’t an add-on. Capcom is partnering up with the Red Cross for a good cause and hosting a blood drive on March 13th, the day when Resident Evil 5 launches.

Those who buy a copy of the game at the World of Wonder gallery on Hollywood Boulevard can also donate blood from 11am to 5pm. So I’m assuming that means they’ll at least give you a cookie too, so you won’t be all disoriented. It’s a win/win situation. Kill some zombies and save some lives. Donors can even win prizes.
