Apple building a "Netbook", is it the iPod Touch HD?Word on the street is that Apple is building a netbook and that the device is being called the “iPod Touch HD”. According to these latest rumors, the device is a lot like the iPod Touch, except with a much larger screen.

If you can believe the hype, the new device is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of this year. It isn’t a complete surprise if true. Netbooks are uber popular and so it would make sense for Apple to get in on the action.

GenevaSound creates largest sound bar, with largest price tag

GenevaSound creates largest sound bar, with largest price tagGenevaSound’s Home Theater system sound bar is the longest sound bar ever designed but it’s yet to be tested. The sound bar sports a 700-watt amplifier and seven speakers which include a 12-inch subwoofer.

All of that, with just 2.1 virtual surround sound. With those speakers and a $4000 price tag, I want 7.1 with a Blu-ray drive and a lot more. What this bar includes? A CD player, radio, and an iPod/iPhone dock to play all your favorite music when not watching TV.

Artificial dolphin fin makes champion swimmers even faster

Artificial dolphin fin makes champion swimmers even fasterWe may never be able to swim as fast as fish, but guys like Ted Ciamillo are hard at work to make sure we can at least get second place. The Greek engineer has come up with a contraption called Lunocet, which is basically a dolphin-inspired 2.5 pound monofin.

It’s lightweight and made of carbon fiber and fiberglass, and spans almost a meter. It’s capable of propelling swimmers almost 33 miles per hour, converting nearly 80 percent of the applied energy into thrust. The appendage is efficient, lightweight and fast. And can propel swimmers almost twice the speed of Michael Phelps.

Gota countertop dishwasher

Gota countertop dishwasherA small dishwasher like this makes no sense. The Gota was specially designed for families who have no children or singles who live alone, but if you have that few dishes to wash, why not save your counter space and do it by hand?

I personally don’t get it. The pre-wash cycle fills the dishwasher with steam, while recycling the cooled down residual water for future cycles. That part at least is good for water conservation. The body is made from ABS polycarbonate which can store enough water for one round of cleaning.

SBMP-N90 phone inspired by Dubai buildings

SBMP-N90 phone inspired by Dubai buildingsWhen you run out of inspiration while designing a phone, just turn to modern architecture. That’s the story behind this odd looking handset. It was inspired by the Burj Al Arab building in Dubai. Where they build all those crazy futuristic buildings.

If you like the style of that part of the world, why not pick up the dual-SIM SBMP-N90 cell phone? Sadly, what’s under the hood is nowhere near as cutting edge as the actual buildings. It’s just a standard GSM and a 1.3 megapixel camera.

Verizon’s Samsung Smooth makes an appearance

Posted in Samsung by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2009

Verizon's Samsung Smooth makes an appearanceVerizon is replacing its low-end Samsung U340 with another handset from the company: the Smooth U350. The new clamshell doesn’t bring anything new to the table though, except for a change in style.

Some features you may already be familiar with include a VGA camera, 128 x 160 resolution display and a lack of microSD memory card slot. I don’t know about you, but I think it’s time that Samsung serious upgrades their entry-level phones.

Behold the JesusPhone!

Posted in Humor by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2009

Behold the JesusPhoneWay back in the day, when Andy Warhol claimed to have a direct line to god, no one was buying it. Probably because his crappy phone was just a generic phone. Had he had this phone, people would have been convinced. Looks like constantly referring to the iPhone as the JesusPhone actually turned it into one.

This piece was shown at the PULSE contemporary art fair in NYC this weekend. Details are scarce, like whether or not anyone actually talked to the almighty. According to a tipster, it was exhibited near works by Eckhart Hahn, but they are unsure if it was actually by him.

Acer wants its own App Store

Posted in Acer by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2009

Acer wants its own App StoreWe can haz app storez too? Acer is next in line to open their own app store. Their senior corporate vice president, Mr. Aymar de Lencquesaing, mentioned that the Taiwanese company “is examining the viability of an app store” during a press event held in London.

There’s no confirmation of whether they will go for it or not, but we are guessing yes. Everyone wants to get in on the App store craze. It also makes sense since they just announced a whole bunch of Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5-powered smartphones not too long ago.

Asus EzLink LCD Monitor

Posted in ASUS by Conner Flynn on March 9th, 2009

Asus EzLink LCD MonitorAt the recently concluded CeBIT expo in Germany Asus introduced a new line of energy-efficient LCD monitors as well as their EzLink series – the first wireless monitor from the company. Users will need to hook up their displays using a Wireless Host Controller Interface (WHCI) or Wireless USB Host Wire Adapter (HWA).

Word is that there isn’t any noticeable degradation of quality compared to conventional wired displays, which is welcome news. Both the VH192C and VH196 are energy-efficient models that look out for the environment and are manufactured using low levels of mercury and just a few lamps. The end result is a power savings of over 20%.

Truth About Roswell Watch is geeky cool

Posted in Watches by Shane McGlaun on March 9th, 2009

roswellwatch-sbI haven’t worn a wristwatch in years, my iPhone is my timepiece of choice and many people are the same way. However, the wristwatch in some forms is still very interesting to me and Romain Jermoe has a new, very limited edition watch that is beyond cool.

The watch is called The Truth About Roswell and is being offering in a very limited edition run of only 9 units. The watch is from the Moon Dust-DNA series and pricing is unspecified, but sure to be expensive. It has mechanical movement and power comes from a winding mechanism. That means it has all those tiny gears and springs inside the case.

Topps baseball cards go high tech

Posted in Topps by Shane McGlaun on March 9th, 2009

toppsbaseballcard-sbWhen I was young I spent one summer collecting all of the baseball cards I could get my hands on. Not so much because I really enjoyed watching baseball, but because I found out that baseball cards can be worth big money. Sadly, the year I collected pretty much sucked and now I have all cards sitting around that are worthless.

Topps has a new line of baseball cards that offer something those old holographic cards couldn’t imagine. When you hold, the new Series I cards up to a webcam you will see a 3D avatar of the player on the card on the computer screen.
