Gaming is a big business in the US and abroad in not only hardware sales, but also the games themselves can be huge moneymakers. Top-flight titles like Halo have outsold blockbuster movies and games continue to make big money even in the current economy.
The cloud-based OnLive gaming service was mentioned here this week and yesterday the guys from Gizmodo went hands on with the PC OnLive system playing Bioshock. Anyone who has seen Bioshock on the PC knows that the game is very graphically demanding.
According to Gizmodo, the system was interesting, but far from perfect. Among the issues noted were lag between the controls and what happens onscreen, visible artifacting and compression issues were noted as well. The water in Bioshock looks realistic on many PCs, but was basically a bunch of blocks on the OnLive system. That seems like a big trade off to me and we still don’t know how much the service will cost. All I can say is it better be cheap.

Let’s hope that the company can work these issues out. The Lag issue is being worked on. I just am not so sure it will perform well on 1.5 Mb connections like they say it will. I signed up to the Onlive beta testing which is supposed to start this summer. I’m not sure how many people will get to beta test, but I’m excited about it. I guess we have to wait and see.
