Hands on: Griffin iTrip Auto Universal FM Transmitter

Hands on: Griffin iTrip Auto Universal FM TransmitterThe iTrip is a pretty simple device. The idea is that you plug one end into your car cigarette lighter socket and the other into the earphone jack of your MP3 player, replacing your car radio with the soothing sounds of your own music collection playing through FM radio.

It’s just that simple. Just plug it in and find a frequency where you hear only static. You’ll get better results if you find one that has some neighboring frequencies with static. Then use the + or - buttons to tune your MP3 player to the same frequency. Just like that your player has replaced your car radio.

It’s all pretty easy to operate. And the device works pretty well. You’re getting what you pay for. Just realize that you won’t be getting optimal sound. It has a stereo and mono setting, but the mono setting is the one with the stronger signal, so you will likely need to use that to get clear sound in populated areas.

I happen to live in a very populated area so I had some trouble finding some static-filled stations, getting a clean sound, but after a few minutes I had it set to mono and it was pretty crisp and clear…Just in mono, which kinda sucks. Those in a less populated area will likely be able to use the stereo option with no problems.

The bottom line is that it’s an affordable way to get your MP3 tunes in your car. Even in mono, it’s nice to hear your own stuff rather then be at the mercy of the radio. It’s compatible with almost all popular players.

We’re calling it a great buy at $19.99. You’ll get a lot of use out of it. Especially if you are cheap about upgrading your car stereo. Like I said, don’t expect miracle sound. It will even charge your MP3 player. We like it.
