AMD drops pricing on some desktop GPUs

MSI HD 4870 Video CardAMD and NVIDIA are the only two companies for most consumers in the discrete video card industry. The two firms are always battling for the superior products in the market place. Over the last few years, NVIDIA has been the more dominant firm in performance, but ATI has scored a few wins, especially with its newer high-end video cards.

Yesterday AMD officially confirmed rumors that were floating around claiming that it would be dropping the price on two of its most popular video cards. Specifically the price is dropping on the Radeon 4850, 4870 512MB, and the 4870 1GB cards.

All AMD partners are expected to drop the prices, but for now a few have already done so. Newegg has the MSI HD 4850 for $154.99 with a $30 mail-in rebate it drops to $124.99. The PowerColor HD 4870 512MB card is now $169.99 with a $20 mail-in rebate making it $149 and the MSI HD 4870 1GB sells for $224 with a $25 mail-in rebate making it $199. Those prices should give buyers considering NVIDIA some serious fodder for thinking on.
