For a while there, manufacturers were concentrating on large sizes, now it’s depth that is all important. TVs are big and you can get one up to 150 inches if you’re rich and bored, but how thin are they? Chances are they are not thin enough to match your wall art. That’s all about to change as companies race to put out the first super-thin LCD TVs.

JVC is about to show off a new prototype of a 32-inch LCD HDTV at CES this week. It’s unique because it’s a mere 7mm thick and weighs in at just 11 pounds, which thinner and lighter than your TV. Most laptops no longer weigh that. Since it’s a prototype, it won’t be showing up on store shelves anytime soon, but with everyone racing to get them to consumers, it won’t be a long wait.

If you have a Final Fantasy III cartridge laying around collecting dust, maybe you can make like this guy and gut it so that it can be merged with a Sony point-and-shoot digital camera. It’s pretty neat looking. Turns out a Sony point-and-shoot camera is just the right size to fit inside a hollowed out cartridge, so the camera innards have been fitted into the cartridge perfectly. Like it was professionally done.

A new 3D Webcam we heard about earlier this year is set to make the rounds at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, followed by early January sales here in the United States. It is called the Minoru 3D Webcam and it will price around $90 when released.

The Minoru is said to provide a 3D stereoscopic image because it is a single piece with two cameras spaced roughly the same distance apart aside. Strange looking similarities to Wall-E aside, the developer of this Webcam says users will tend to look into the eyes of the camera as they light up – perhaps to suck more cash out of one’s pocket.

Canon unveiled prior to the Consumer Electronics Show this week new high definition camcorders and standard definiton camcorders. The HD camcorders, in particular the high-end VIXIA HV40 HDV, are of note because they feature a new Canon digital image processor known as DIGIC DV III.

Canon says its DIGIC DV III image processor has a higher speed engine, offering better color reproduction, clairty and noise reduction. It is also the backbone behind some other new Canon HD camcorder features, including 8-megapixel photo capture, face detection technology and an enhanced auto exposure system.

Iomega is taking the tradeshow road this week to unveil a new network storage solution for media files being showcased in the living room. It is called the Home Media Network Hard Drive and pricing starts around $160.

The Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive, available in 500GB and 1TB storage sizes, is designed to act as both backup server and also media hub. It supports iTunes and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) certified devices, allowing it to save, store and stream audio, video and photos to a wide array of home consumer electronics.

Samsung is turning to an online video partner in the same way LG and Netflix relate in order to begin bringing Internet to select flat panel HDTVs. Yahoo is the choice for Samsung in this venture and televisions from this relationship will be available sometime this year.

The new “Interent@TV – Content Service” from Samsung makes use of Yahoo’s Widget Engine to bring a variety of Internet-related content to the home media room screen. A host of Widgets wil be available, including Flickr, Yahoo News, Yahoo Weather and Yahoo! Finance, USA TODAY, YouTube, eBay and Showtime Networks, among others. Other services will be added over time.

LG and Netflix seem to feel confident enough in the desire for streaming movies to consumer devices in that they are now bringing the experience to other products for the home. The two announced today plans for Netflix-enabled “Broadband HDTVs.”

These new LCD and plasma HDTVs will begin being available this spring. LG is embedding the Netflix software into these televisions, thereby letting Netflix customers watch the growing library of movies, television shows and HD content available through Netflix’s streaming video offering.

Who could argue with that? It looks so realistic with the large white Wiimote attached bayonet style. Another strange thing is that in the pics the gun appears to be hardwired to the Wimote’s B button via a bent hanger wire that pulls the trigger. Now that’s craftsmanship.

Add this one to the ever growing pantheon of Apple rumors. PCPerspective has reason to believe that Apple is preparing a 24″ iMac. They say that we will get a set of four new iMac computers announced this week. Two 20″ iMacs with an NVIDIA integrated-GPU chipset based on the MCP79 design (the same used in the most recent MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks) and one of those will include the mobility GeForce 9600-series discrete GPU as well. This integrated + discrete graphics solution is basically identical the setup the new 15″ MacBook Pro includes.

If you buy into the hype, the 24″ iMacs will have the same integrated chipset but both of these will include discrete graphics solutions. The lower-end 24″ model will use the same mobility 9600 series that the MacBook Pro uses and the higher-end model will use a slightly faster GeForce 9800M solution. That would make the new 24″ iMac a useful gaming machine.

It seems like it has been official ever since we first started slobbering all over it’s dual-screen goodness. Even with it’s first video appearance, it already seemed official. Then it really started showing off. They’re so cute at this age. Anyhow, the beast with two screens is now officially official.

At last it is confirmed by Lenovo, offering great performance, with a 17-inch primary display and a 10-inch slide-out panel. Details about exact configurations are sparse, but apparently buyers will be able to outfit them with high-end Intel CPUs, optional RAID HDD / SSD setups, NVIDIA Quadro FX graphics, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, dual-link DVI / Display Port / VGA support, a 7-in-1 card reader, five USB ports, WiFi, optional WiMAX, a smartcard reader and a dual thermal solution to keep things cool.

As if to say that rumors of his impending health decline have been greatly exaggerated, Steve Jobs has come clean about his weight loss in a open letter to the Apple community, just a day before Macworld.

He says that a hormone imbalance is to blame. “The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I’ve already begun treatment,”. Doctors expect that it will take him until late Spring to regain the weight and body mass that we are used to seeing. Jobs will also stay on as CEO during his recovery.

One of the problems with backing data up to an external hard drive for many users is that they either forget to execute the backups or they don’t know how to choose the files to backup to the hard drive. Some drives include software that automates the backup process, but the user still has to choose the files that are backed up.
