Wolfenstein PC case mod

Wolfenstein PC case modWe love us a good case mod round these parts and the Wolfenstein case mod sure brings back memories. The FuG-01/ET aka the Wolfenstein PC Case Mod. This beauty was inspired by the Wolfenstein 3D video games of course.

It features dual electric gauges, one measures amperage, and the other core voltages. There’s also an old phone handset, which won’t make any calls to HQ, a carrying strap and some bullet holes. Creator “Sheyr” really did a Ben Heck of a job capturing the look and feel of the game.

Kogan Agora Android phone abortedBack in December we told you about the Kogan Agora, a very promising Google smartphone. Well, we have some bad news for those that were hoping to lay hands on the inexpensive Google phone.

The Kogan Agora Android release has been postponed indefinitely. The move presumably followed a meeting with Google, with Ruslan Kogan pulling out of the launch citing that it needed to be redesigned in order “to ensure its compatibility with all future Android applications.” Full refunds are being offered to anyone that has already bought the device.

MIT Labs TOFU robot is a furry dancing machine

Posted in Robots by Conner Flynn on January 16th, 2009

If a Gremlin had sex with a bird, then decided to have a threesome with Keepon, then a Furby wandered by delivering a pizza and getting in on the action, this would be their bastard lovechild. It’s name is TOFU, a “squash and stretch” robot with OLED eyes developed by the boffins at the MIT Media Lab.

Tofu uses techniques of social expression that have been employed by 2D animators for ages, to explore the impact on robotics. One thing is for sure. That bot knows how to groove and puts most humans to shame with it’s dancing skills. The video above shows off his moves, which are strangely very pimp-like.

Time’s up for Circuit City, they will now be liquidatedCircuit City has been one of the hardest hit electronic’s retailers in this economy. After announcing the closing of many of it’s stores in November and saying that they would not be shutting down additional stores in December, looks like they will be closing down more after all.

The company’s CEO admitted that liquidation might be a very real possibility if a sale of the company didn’t occur by January 16th, and well, time’s up. According to a report from the AP, the once giant electronics retailer will be forced to liquidate after all, which is good news for bargain hunters and bad news for employees.

Buffalo offers new powerline networking gear

Buffalo PL2-UPA-L1Right now, I live in a single story home of about 1700 square feet. You would think in that modest amount of space that a Wi-Fi signal would be strong everywhere. That isn’t the case, in the living room (a mere 10 feet) from the hub my PS3 often can’t connect to the Web.

To fix that problem I have been eyeing some powerline networking gear and Buffalo has introduced some new kit. The Buffalo PL2-UPA-L1 is the firm’s latest powerline networking gear and uses the DS2 chipset. This means that it is compatible with any other DS2 chipset networking gear around.

Schlage LiNK deadbolt works with home automation

Schlage LiNK LockMy family and I are in the process of buying a new home. One of the first things I started lobbying the wife for (don’t laugh, any married guy will tell you that is an integral part of a relationship) was some serious home automation goodness. I want everything to be automated in the home and talk in the voice of HAL.

Schlage has announced a new deadbolt that will be perfect for my new house and is about as geeky as a deadbolt gets. First, you don’t need a key to unlock it. The lock opens via a 4-digit code that is entered on a 10-digit keypad. The lock can be set up to notify the homeowner via a text when a specific code is entered.

AMD HD 4000 mobility video cards unveiled at CES

Posted in AMD,CES 2009 by Shane McGlaun on January 16th, 2009

AMD HD4000 GPUI was at CES last week schlepping around the halls looking for something cool. Unfortunately cool was in short supply at this year’s show. One of the things that I did find interesting was the new mobile GPUs that AMD was showing off.

AMD introduced its line of Radeon Mobility 4000 video cards for notebooks that includes the HD 4800, HD 4600, HD 4500 and HD 4300 GPUs. The HD 4800 is the first mobile GPU according to AMD to break the teraflop barrier.

Posted in Nintendo by Shane McGlaun on January 16th, 2009

NPD Growth ChartIn my home, we have a Wii, Xbox, and PS3 so most of my son’s friends end up over here playing video games after school. The one console that all of them were hoping for last Christmas was the Wii. It seems they weren’t alone in their dreams of a Wii.

Nintendo is talking up the numbers just released by the NPD Group that talk about the gaming market in 2008. According to NPD, the Nintendo Wii and DS game systems were the most popular systems, by a long way, during 2008.

Android phones get 2D Bar Code reader

Posted in Android by Conner Flynn on January 15th, 2009

Android phones get 2D Bar Code readerIt used to be that bar codes were just for use in grocery stores. That’s not the case anymore. Grocery cashiers have hogged all of that swiping bar code glory for long enough. Personal bar code readers, like ScanLife’s latest for Android phones, allows you to quickly visit Web sites, phone numbers or videos.

It’s a shortcut for typing on your keypad or browsing. You can even create your own bar code on ScanLife’s Web site for quick access to functions that you use on a daily basis. The software has been available as a free iPhone app since August, but now you can download it for Android phones as well.

Space Invaders retro tabletop game bank

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on January 15th, 2009

Space Invaders retro tabletop game bankThe Japanese love banks. Like us, they also love them some Space Invaders. This latest offering from Takara Tomy may look like an actual sized tabletop Space Invaders game, but it’s really a miniature replica bank. It’s a unique take on the whole bank concept. It features an LCD screen that unfortunately is not playable, but acts as coin counter.

It will take up to 80 100 yen coins, and each time you drop a coin in, another invader lights up. So, basically you are playing the game in reverse. In this case, it pays to have more invaders on screen. It makes saving money not only fun, but retro and geeky at the same time. It will help you save up for those Space Invaders headphones or that Space Invaders Keyboard you’ve been wanting.

Darth Vader Gas Mask

Posted in Star Wars by Conner Flynn on January 15th, 2009

Darth Vader Gas MaskIf Anakin Skywalker had lived during WWII, this is very probably what his helmet would have looked like. You can easily see a gas-masked Vader carrying out Hitler’s orders. It was made for The Vader Project, which features custom Darth Vader helmets, by Tristan Eaton and AZK ONE. Behold the Darth Vader Gas Mask! You can almost hear the familiar breathing as he breaths in clean filtered air.

The Vader Project is curated by Dov Kelemer and Sarah Jo Marks of DKE Toys. Kelemer and Marks gathered up almost 100 underground and surrealist painters, artists , and designers to participate. Each artist was given a 1:1 scale authentic prop replica of the actual Darth Vader helmet used in the films. Each artist was free to paint, design, mash up, and customize the helmet.

Mickey Mouse Transformer hits Japan

Mickey Mouse Transformer hits JapanSome people are obsessed with Disney. Some not so much. But the makers of this new Transformer toy from Japan clearly love both Mickey Mouse and Transformers. I admit, when we first spotted this toy in the prototype phase, at our robot sister site Botropolis, we weren’t all that impressed.

Then when we saw the first pics with some color, we still weren’t that thrilled and figured it was geared toward chumps who would buy anything Disney. However, now that we see the final product, I have to admit that it looks cool. And I’m no Mickey Mouse fan. It was on display at this week’s Tokyo Toy Forum 2009.

YouTube heads to the Wii and Playstation 3

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on January 15th, 2009

YouTube heads to the Wii and Playstation 3YouTube has enjoyed tremendous success, but like all superstars, things can get lonely at the top. It’s a service that’s been stuck on the computer. The internet to be exact. Sure, it gets tons of hits, lots of people enter it’s doors every day. But it gets lonely. People just watch and post their videos. No one stops to talk.

Anyway, YouTube wants to start socializing more. So it’s getting off the computer and onto your TV, through video game consoles. YouTube is coming to the Sony Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii. It flips Xbox 360 the bird for now. PS3 and Wii owners can just go to www.youtube.com/tv to get a specially-formatted version of the site for your TV.
