Smartbolt tells you when to stop screwing

Smartbolt tells you when to stop screwingMankind lives in such an amazing techno-golden-age that even the bolt is getting smart. That’s why it’s called the Smartbolt, it’s equipped with a tiny indicator disk on top that shows you just how tight it is. No fancy electronics, just a simple visual tension indicator that starts out red and turns more black as it gets tightened. Looks like a nipple, which makes sense. Mine would turn colors if you gave them a twist too. They even have a more-precise version that goes from yellow to green when 90% tight, then black at 100%.

This is a great invention, mostly because torque wrench’s tend to be large and hard to maneuver in tight spaces. If we can get regular screws to do this, that would be awesome.

Are they set at differing torque settings or is it just measuring when the head is tight against the body?

“The indication is based on the most accurate known principle for fastener tension measurement – actual fastener elongation under load.”
