Dell charging more for Windows XP

Posted in Dell by Conner Flynn on December 7th, 2008

Dell charging more for Windows XPDell is offering Windows XP on certain home PCs again instead of Vista, but you’ll pay for it. It will cost you another $150 for the older operating system. The Inspiron 1525 laptop and 530 desktop allow you to configure the system with XP, apparently taking advantage of the downgrade loophole normally reserved for business users.

I guess that means that Dell is still getting backlash regarding Vista after all this time. Many consumers are still convinced that the OS is no good and they want a Windows version they can trust. What do you guys think? Do you prefer XP or Vista?

Some time ago, I finally switched to Vista myself after hearing about all of Vistas flaws. My experience? I have to say, I haven’t had any problems, surprisingly. It’s the smoothest OS I’ve used yet. So, I’m not sure what all the fuss is really about.

    XP obviously…

  2. KristopherWindsor Says:

Mainly it’s compatibility with older software that is the problem. Also it hogs RAM.
The only problem for me is that I can’t sleep my computer unless it’s in Power Saver mode.

Well I’m planning to buy a laptop that comes without an OS and install XP (even though the manufacturer doesn’t offer XP support) because of two things:
    a) I want to work to make money, not to relearn to use an OS
    b) I don’t want to get extra RAM just for the sake of Vista.

Linux of course. I tried to remove Vista from my Dell laptop purchase, even demanded it over the phone, but Dell would not sell without hell.
So the day it arrived I wiped the drive, repartitioned, put Linux Mint on it. I’ve been happy with the laptop ever since, but angry that I wasted 100 bucks on Vista that I threw away.

This information is false. Dell only charges $25 for the downgrade license. These people are acting like Dell is acting alone in this when in actuality, it’s Microsoft’s doing. The Microsoft Policy clearly states that you must purchase at least Vista Home Premium to get the downgrade. Dell is charging 125.00 for the Vista OS and another 25.00 for the downgrade to XP. If you purchase a system you will find that the product key on it is actually a Vista key although XP is on the system. At least Dell is nice enough to send you both a copy of XP and Vista when you do this. They don’t have to. If you don’t like being charged to stay with XP, don’t blame Dell or HP or Gateway..blame Microsoft. Get your facts straight before you go spouting off at the mouth.
