Electrolux Soft-Refrigerator concept

Electrolux Soft-Refrigerator conceptCheck out this collapsible Soft-Refrigerator concept by Electrolux. It proves once again that an accordion design works great. Through the use of a heat-insulating membranes and modular shelving, this fridge can actually be collapsed and optimized for size. Because sometimes you don’t have a lot of food or you need more room in the kitchen.

When you collapse the fridge there’s less space inside that needs to be cooled, thereby reducing your energy use. Plus it looks kinda futuristic. Who wouldn’t want a collapsible fridge? Let’s say you go shopping on Monday. By Friday, you fridge is waist high again.

Kingston launches Intel X58/Core i7 triple channel RAM kits

Posted in Kingston by Shane McGlaun on October 30th, 2008

Kingston Hyper X Triple Channel RAMEnthusiasts and computer geeks everywhere are waiting in anticipation for the latest Intel X58 chipset mainboards and the Intel Core i7 CPUs to hit the market. The X58 will be the first non-NVIDIA chipset mainboard to run SLI and has other interesting features.

One of the caveats of the new X58/Core i7 combo is that maximum voltage for RAM DIMMS has been lowered significantly from previous combinations. It’s not uncommon to see enthusiast RAM today require voltages over 2V. The X58/Core i7 combo can have a max of 1.65V for RAM.

PowerPutt Mini Golf arcade game tees off

PowerPuttI’ve never played a round of real golf, but I play mini golf with my kids quite frequently. The embarrassing part about mini golf with my kids is that my son usually beats me. It’s tough on the ego to be trounced by a 7-year-old, even if he is like a mini golf Tiger Woods with three hole in one shots per game.

I can still beat my son in video games though and if I can find PowerPutt in a local arcade the tournament is on. PowerPutt comes from the company that developed Golden Tee and offers good graphics with the same sort of controls used by Golden Tee.

Lenovo announces new ThinkCenter models with Power Manager

Posted in Computers by Shane McGlaun on October 30th, 2008

Lenovo ThinkCenter DesktopNotebook computers outsold desktops for the first time ever recently, but the desktop is still alive and kicking. The desktop is especially popular in the corporate world when mobility isn’t needed for workers. Companies that deploy hundreds of computers across the enterprise also want systems that are power efficient.

Lenovo has announced new ThinkCenter desktop computers called the M58 and M58p. The two systems feature Power Manager and are the first Lenovo systems to do so. Power Manager allows administrators to program the machines to turn off automatically at set intervals like holidays and weekends.

ATEN Laptop USB KVMA KVM switch is a necessity in some environments, like the sever room. In other places, a KVM switch can simply make things less cluttered and less complex. This is especially true when you need two computers, but don’t have room for two keyboards, displays, and mice.

Psystar readying Mac notebook clones

Psystar readying Mac notebook clonesAccording to a message from the company to an AppleInsider reader, Psystar is preparing the clones faster then Emperor Palpatine with hemorrhoids. They want to stick it to Apple with their Blu-ray enabled desktop, but clearly that wasn’t enough.

They will also be releasing a new notebook that can run Mac OS X. I wonder what the lawyers think about this. Steve Jobs can not be happy right now. Not with Psystar committed to offering this Open Computer notebook at a competitive price. There is definitely a disturbance in the force.

Ford’s new HUD dash looks pretty sweet

Posted in Automotive by Conner Flynn on October 29th, 2008

Ford’s new HUD dash looks pretty sweetSure, we’ve heard it all when it comes to Ford jokes. Found On Road Dead, Fix Or Repair Daily, etc. Say what you like about Ford, you can’t deny the coolness of their SmartGauge LCD panels in their new 2010 hybrids.

Instead of the usual boring analog dials, Ford gives you a LCD screen cluster and even some animations. Notice the fuel gauge. Nice to look at, easy to find and functional. The best part about using an LCD display is that it’s fairly customizable. You can display battery charge, GPS and Satellite radio coverage, maybe even current mp3 track information. Of course there’s the usual boring MPH and RPM indicators. They just don’t look boring.

Pantech Slate now official on AT&TWe told you about the Pantech Slate earlier this month. You might remember, it’s the “world’s thinnest QWERTY keyboard” handset. It’s now official at AT&T. This one is aimed squarely at those with messaging addictions, who want good looks and a slim design. It sports the full QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth, video recording, 1.3 megapixel camera, email, instant messaging and support for AT&T’s Media Net.

Biopod Automated Tripod: Robo-Paparazzi for short people

Biopod Automated Tripod: Robo-Paparazzi for short peopleThe Biopod automated tripod is a concept at the moment, so we don’t have to worry about Robo-Tripods following us around and selling pics to tabloids just yet. But one day soon that is exactly what will happen.

This little guy crawls about 3 inches off of the ground and can’t even grip walls to get it’s shot. So given it’s size and adherence to the ground, this thing will be stalking little people and snapping upskirt pics only. Until it hovers, that’s all it has career-wise. You gotta start somewhere. I suppose it could always catalog footwear and sidewalk pot-holes.

John McCain iPhone app is pretty funny

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on October 29th, 2008

Obama has an iPhone app, so it’s only fitting that John McCain have one too. Here you can interact with the cranky maverick and get him to make all of his weird old man grunts, say “My friends” and such. It’s not official, and may only work on jailbroken iPhones, but this is way too much fun. You can even put the old sour-puss to sleep when he gets too cranky.

USB “Port” Wine sticks it to the EU

Posted in USB by Conner Flynn on October 29th, 2008

USB “Port” Wine sticks it to the EUBecause of a new EU trade rule, wineries aren’t allowed to use the word “port” on their label unless the wine was actually made in Portugal. Which sucks for some wine makers. But California’s Peltier Station Winery came up with a unique loophole. They are calling their new dessert wine “USB” and they’ve even put a tree with USB roots on the label. That’s what I call sticking it to the man! The man being the EU. The fun doesn’t end there however.

A company called 6 West Design made the label and they did something special with the USB-tree on the front. It’s is made of binary code that translates to “Peltier Station.” There are also some fill-in-the-blanks on the back of the label like “an im____ant agreement” or “in your ____folio.” This my friends is how you screw the powers-that-be, instead of them screwing you.

AT&T sends out SMS to confirm free iPhone WiFi at Starbucks

Posted in AT&T by Conner Flynn on October 29th, 2008

AT&T sends out SMS to confirm free iPhone WiFi at StarbucksSeveral people are getting SMS messages from AT&T reminding them of the long-awaited “free wireless at Starbucks” plan. It was first announced in February with a target launch spring 2008, the service has been quietly running on and off since April, including two hours of daily access at any Starbucks store or AT&T hotspot.

T-Mobile users with existing hotspot accounts are supposed to have ongoing access to the network in Starbucks stores. The service has been available on a spotty basis, but this is an official “yes it’s working” announcement that has been a while in coming. Hopefully we can put an end to this chapter and the service stays on at long last.

New “I’m a PC” ad is creepy

Posted in Microsoft by Conner Flynn on October 29th, 2008

I’m A PC — Crowdsourced from AlleyInsider on Vimeo.
Alright, so the Seinfeld-Gates ads were interesting. Then came the “I’m a PC” ads that were different, but not really all that cool. That’s when Apple’s latest ads began to get lamer as well. So now we’re on to the latest round of “I’m a PC” ads and this one is appropriately creepy for Halloween. It features a bunch of Youtube types saying “I’m a PC”. Problem is that I found them all to be pretty creepy.

It has me seriously thinking about a Mac. I’ll break it down for you. A few could easily be serial killers, specially the first dude who is so in love with his shirt, one chases zebras and obviously is on serious medication, an old lady who wrangles lamas looks like she has to have about a million cats and I’m sure must throw them at people, a bling lover and more. Yeah, this one is just wrong.

ASUS to launch Android handset in ’09

Posted in ASUS by Conner Flynn on October 29th, 2008

ASUS to launch Android handset in ‘09DigiTimes is now reporting that Asus is planning to launch an Android-based handset, which confirms some rumors we’ve heard. They were invited to join the Open Handset Alliance after all. The phone will apparently be available sometime in the first half of 2009, and might land in Taiwan first under ASUS’ own brand before coming our way in the form of different customized models. As you might expect, no other details at this point, but sources say that ASUS will be phasing out its use of the Ericsson Mobile Platform for handset platforms from Qualcomm and Marvell.
