Star Wars Bowling Balls geek up your game

Posted in Star Wars by Conner Flynn on October 19th, 2008

Star Wars Bowling Balls geek up your gameJedi can bowl a perfect game every time by using the force, no balls are necessary. But since you haven’t apprenticed under Yoda, you could use some help. These Brunswick Star Wars Viz-a-Ball bowling balls may be just what you need to give your game a boost while simultaneously getting laughed at by those around you.

Or maybe not. You may just be trading a plain gutter ball for a fancy gutter ball. They’ll cost you between $92-$120 each. There’s Yoda, C-3PO, Darth Vader and even a Darth Maul ball. Who knows, before you know it you may be joining the Bespin Bowling League and low-fiving Ugnaughts. (I apologize for that nerd joke and regret that I even know what an Ugnaut is)

Future vehicles could be made of “buckypaper”

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on October 19th, 2008

Future vehicles could be made of “buckypaper”Flying in a plane made of paper of any kind sounds dangerous, but ‘buckypaper’ isn’t paper at all, at least not what we’re used to. It’s a new type of carbon nanotube that may usher in a new lightweight, high strength composite. It was discovered accidentally while trying to create the same conditions that exist in a star. Buckypaper isn’t ready for prime-time just yet, but the potential is amazing.

The tube-shaped molecule is dispersed in liquid and then filtered through a fine mesh, creating a very thin yet powerful film, called buckypaper. The molecule has a large surface area, and that’s what gives it the incredible strength: when stacked to become a composite, you have something 10 times lighter, but maybe 500 times stronger than steel, while conducting and dispersing heat like copper. It could find a wide range of uses in areas like aviation, computers, batteries, armor, even fuel cells.

Focus Design’s self-balancing unicycle

Focus Design’s self-balancing unicycleThe latest in personal transport promises to make you look ridiculous on your way to work. Focus Design’s SBU electric self-balancing unicycle will also help those circus Clowns who never mastered balance, thereby making it easier to graduate from Clown College.

The SBU can be steered by leaning left to right, like a regular unicycle, and it uses Segway-type gyroscopes to power you forward and backward. It moves at 8MPH and lasts about 1.5hrs on a single charge. Yes, it’s coming to market, for real. Focus is looking to do a limited run of ten SBUs next month, assuring those who buy it that they don’t look dorky at all for $1,500 a pop. Check out a video below.

Star Trek Nutcrackers are just wrong

Posted in Sci-Fi by Conner Flynn on October 18th, 2008

Star Trek Nutcrackers are just wrongEveryone knows that Trekkies are big on nuts. And what they have been lacking are some Trek inspired Nutcrackers to go with their Enterprise bottle opener. Now geeks can crack nuts with either Spock or Kirk dressed in the uniforms of the original series.

They’re 12 inches tall and you can get them for $34.95 each. Or you know, you could forgo them completely and like, work on getting a girlfriend. This has to be one of the saddest pieces of Trek merchandise I have ever seen.

34 Geek Pumpkins

34 Geek PumpkinsOver at Walyou they’ve compiled a list of 34 geek pumpkins. Some of them are pretty awesome works of art, while others make us realize that nerds have far too much time on their hands. I mean, who the hell thinks to themselves, “Today I’m going to carve Say Anything’s famous boombox scene into a Pumpkin”? Yeah I know. Not a thought I’m familiar with. Surely it’s the product of a demented mind. Anyway hit the link to check them all out.

Vladimir Putin puts a satellite collar on his dog

Vladimir Putin puts a satellite collar on his dogAbout a year ago, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced that he would one day like to be able to pinpoint the location of his black Labrador, Koni, at any time using a Russian satellite navigation system known as GLONASS.

Yesterday, he did it. Mr. Putin procured a satellite collar that will allow him to track her, no matter where she is in Russia. (This dog must get around) According to Putin, “She’s wagging her tail, she likes it.” The system will be fully working for Russian territory by the end of this year.

Amazing Lego Ferrari F1Is there nothing that LEGO can not do? This is one of the coolest LEGO things yet. To promote and celebrate Lego World, which apparently started yesterday, this highly detailed LEGO Ferrari F1 was seen cruising the streets of Amsterdam. Jetix presenter, Leon Krijgsman rode in the Ferrari, made using 80,000 Lego bricks. Lego World will run till the 21st of this month in Zwolle, and will offer tons of Lego craziness. This awesome Ferrari celebrates the anniversary of the legendary brick. One has to wonder just how heavy that F1 is comapred to the real deal.

Commuter sleep goggles rely on the kindness of strangers

Commuter sleep goggles rely on the kindness of strangersPyocotan has a great idea with their “Noriko-san”, a mask that’s designed for napping commuters. But it has one big drawback. It relies on the kindness of other humans around you. The idea is this: If you’ve got a long commute on a train, you are probably tired and want to nap. But you don’t want to miss your stop and be late for work. It blocks light and lets you rest, with a display in front that shows what stop you plan on getting off at.

That’s where your fellow humans come in. These people around you can wake you up when you approach your stop, should you be in dreamland. Sadly, that’s why this device is doomed to fail. Lets face it, people suck. Half of them would leave you bleeding if you got stabbed. BUT it’s a great idea and who knows, maybe it would encourage some interaction.

Minoru robot webcam for 3D video chat

Posted in Webcams by Conner Flynn on October 17th, 2008

Minoru robot webcam for 3D video chatWeb cams have just gone all view-master on us. The Minoru looks like a super-cute Japanese robot and is designed to deliver the Internet experience in 3D. The stereo webcam uses two lenses to form one image that appears three-dimensional…when the viewer wears a pair of 3D glasses. When are we gonna get beyond these nerd glasses?

It’s compatible with chat services like Skype, AIM, and Windows Live Messenger. Apparently the device can take 3D photos and output 3D video that’s uploadable to YouTube too. He’s part E.T., part Wall-E and he’ll be on sale in December for $100.

Icono Home Phone concept

Icono Home Phone conceptSo house phones are nearly extinct, or will be soon. Zinc Chan apparently can’t let go of the landline and has redesigned it into the Icono Home Phone. Forget numbers. The phone won’t remember them, instead you draw the shape that corresponds with the person you want to contact and the phone will automatically call them. The pad looks like a constellation map.

The handset has also been updated and comes in two segments, one to place on your thumb while the other is attached to your pinky. You know, so you can make that annoying “call me” gesture. I’m not sure if this concept is an improvement or not, but Zinc lost me with the whole “call me” hand gesture thing required to use it.

Humping Bunny defiles your computerThese USB bunnies are cute. But you know bunnies. They want to multiply. They hump like, well, like bunnies. And if there are no other USB bunnies in your home, it will gladly do the nasty with your USB ports. Because bunnies are crazy. They can’t stop.

Your computer or laptop will never be the same. Straight from Japan, each bunny comes equipped with authentic? humping motions and 1GB of memory. They’ll cost you about $15.

NVIDIA Quadro CX accelerates Adobe Creative Suite

Posted in NVIDIA by Shane McGlaun on October 17th, 2008

NVIDIA Quadro CXThe GPU has come of age and is no longer something that titillates hoards of gamers with promises of better video game graphics alone. Today the GPU can do many things from being used as a super computing platform to greatly accelerating many applications more efficiently than a CPU can.

One of the biggest new features in Adobe Creative Suite 4 introduced not so long ago was the ability for the software to take advantage of the power of the GPU for faster processing and applying of things like filters. NVIDIA has announced a new GPU-based product called the Quadro CX that is designed specifically to accelerate Creative Suite 4.

MeWe Quad Wii Remote ChargerAnyone who plays with their Wii a lot knows that the batteries go dead way faster than you want them too. GUNNAR Optiks offers cool comptuer glasses

GUNNAR Optiks Computer GlassesI work in front of a computer about 12 hours a day five days a week and then I typically end up in front of one on the weekend for important activities like fragging some noobs in Call of Duty. Many times per week, I end up with headaches from the screen glare from my monitor or watery eyes. I have often wanted a pair of computer glasses to reduce the glare from my computer, but have never found them in local stores.

GUNNAR Optiks has introduced a new line of computer glasses that can be purchased over-the-counter and can be custom made to a specific prescription. The glasses come in several frame and lens styles that are cool looking and the lenses are coated in materials that change the way artificial light hits your eyes, reducing glare and improving the resolution of the wearer.
