Give the homeless a cart & let them sleep in it
You know the old saying, If you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em? Apparently this Shelter Cart concept by Gregor Timlin is a lot like that, If you can’t solve the problem at least give them a cart to collect recyclable cans and sleep in. The problem being homelessness. The goal of the project was to design a tool for those homeless people who collect cans and bottles and make money by taking them to the recycling plant.

The idea was that it would raise awareness regarding the homeless issue. And it’s a brilliant design too, allowing them to collect by day and sleep at night. Though it does seem counterproductive to focus on something like this while the main problem of homelessness remains.

  1. The Spanish Inquistion Says:

Ah, nothing like sleeping in what is essentially a dumpster, I’m sure the evening rain of old stale beer and soda is like a lovely symphony to the homeless…

All joking aside I assume there are two separate compartments one for collecting the cans and another expandable one for sleeping. Not a bad idea although it seems that aside from raising a little public awareness it is little more than a nifty gimmick. And to be honest I’m not sure it’s going to raise much public awareness, although it can’t hurt to try.

those are pretty cool! it helps clean up the city, and i know there are scrapyards that pay for aluminum cans. the problem of homelessness does still remain, yes, but it’s not a problem that’s going to be solved anytime soon. in the meantime, it’s a good way to give them at least a temporary shelter from the elements.

  3. Steph Says:

Good lord.. yet another gadget homeless people can’t afford. They sleep outside because they have nothing! If they had this, they wouldn’t have nothing, would they?

  4. Boob Biter Says:

Photoshopped - thats not a real homeless person. LMAO

  5. duh Says:

    @Steph.

The Title says, “Give the homeless a cart & let them sleep in it”. It doesn’t say sell, you stupid twit.

  6. walt Says:

i agree with inquisition–even after you clean it out and maybe change compartmentsm there will be no way around avoinding the stench of rotten beer/ stickiness of spilled soda

  7. Liam Says:

You do realize that they won’t go to the recycling place everyday… That means their cart will be full, and they can’t sleep in it without dumping their precious cans out.

  8. Dane Says:

They are marketing these wrong. If made out of darker material this is a portable hunting blind and it can help you pack the deer out. If they want to help the homeless sell them to hunters and give the money to the homeless.

  9. marvin nubwaxer Says:

    i want one

  10. mark Says:

    how stupid is this?

  11. Shelton Harlow Says:

Apparently this “inventor” has never actually been around street people. These folks are scavengers of anything and “Collect” the bottles, cans etc. as their only possessions. And I don’t mean “scavenger” in a negative light. They look for specific things in our cast-offs. Has he ever seen a shopping cart lady? A bag man?. They don’t recycle, they guard their treasures.

This is offensive on SO many level.

  12. SomeGirl Says:

Depending on the state there are machines outside of grocery stores and other public places in which to depoisiot cans and bottles and get on automatic return. I live in Oregon where the homeless population gathers cans all day to make money for food, prescriptions, beer, housing; whatever that paticular person needs. One homeless man was even shot by a 20 year old college student while hitting the jackpot of cans outside a frat house because this young man didnt want him in their trash.
The point being these people do collect dillegently, all day. And at the end of the day there may be a line to turn in your cans because people want to money to eat. Though the idea isn’t fitting for the mentally ill and some other homeless its helpful to try to recongnize that in every state, county and city you have different people who are homeless for different reasons. These people all need different things to get back on thier feet, if thats what they want.

  13. just me Says:

Dont you think chavs or thugs might take advantage of this,,,maybe resulting in pushing the tramp away whilst he is a sleep! Good idea, but not in this cruel world!

  14. pat Says:

Who would pay for them. They look pricey. And where is my pillow?

  15. mrleep Says:

Instead of spending all the effort on designing and producing these carts, why dont they just build a block of flats and give it to them?

  16. Anonymous Says:

sorry but this is fake. the shadow of the homeless man doesn’t align correctly. definetely photoshopped

  17. mcstunnah Says:

I think its a good idea. The homeless could probably collect cans in bags(as most do now), and then carry them in the cart, which would solve the problem of beer and soda getting your bed all sticky and smelly. I think the real problem with this is that it makes it very easy to steal homeless people. Just flip them over and roll ‘em home.

  18. Irish Girl Says:

    It’s a nifty concept.

Is it weird that I recognised the area in which these pictures were taken?
At the back of St. James’ Gate, Guinness Brewery, Dublin, Ireland!

  19. Irish Girl Says:

My previous point being that in Ireland, you DON’T get paid for recycling your cans. It’s still sorta a backward country here.

  20. LVB Says:

Hm. I wonder what price a homeless would get for a cart like that. And how many beers he/she would be able to buy for that.

  21. B Man Says:

Amusing that people think they will “solve” the homeless problem. What delusional thinkers. There have always been homeless people and there will always be homeless people, no matter how much free stuff you give them. Food kitchens, yes. Dumpsters on wheels??? Grow up, people.

  22. Joel Says:

it seems impracticle for a homeless person to sleep in the very cart they just put all their cans in.

if someone had ever recycled before, before they designed this useless (and ugly) cart, they would realize how messy it is.

no.. this is a very poor idea.

besides, the homeless don’t NEED these, they already have shopping carts..

how about you give away some blankets, since those will actually provide some warmth, unlike that ridiculous contraption…

  23. Ano N. Ymus Says:

it might not solve the problem, but it does help elevate their situation by helping provide at least some form of shelter. so long as they are given out for free to the homeless, and measures are taken to keeo them from selling the cart to a scrap yard for booze money
