Palm Treo 800w gets official

Posted in Palm by Shane McGlaun on July 15th, 2008

Palm Treo 800wThe Palm Treo was one of the original smartphones. As new handsets have hit the market the Treo has become mostly overshadowed by cooler options. Despite that fact, the Treo still continues on and back in May we saw a spy shot of the new Treo 800w.

Palm has now officially launched the Treo 800w and announced that the device is a Sprint exclusive handset. The 800w will sell for $249.99 after discounts and 2-year agreement. The handset will operate on Sprint’s EVDO Rev A network for fast broadband speeds.

The operating system is Windows Mobile 6 and Palm says the Treo 800w is ready to work with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 and 2007 right out of the box. Also featured is GPS capable of providing turn-by-turn directions and Wi-Fi is integrated as well. One nice feature of the 800w that was first seen on the iPhone is the ability to dial phone numbers from webpage’s or email with one touch.

Actually, this capability has been in Palm Treo for many years–at least in the Palm OS versions. As far back as the Treo 600, you could dial by touching phone numbers in web pages or emails as well as open web pages from URL’s in emails, and so on.

A lot of the supposedly “revolutionary” capabilities of the iPhone have been around in Palm Treo phones. These include downloading and playing music, videos, remotely syncing with Outlook at the office, Google maps, email from various accounts including Yahoo! and Gmail, built-in camcorder, and more.

Correction - the Palm OS has been able to do that for a while. Unless the difference is that with the Palm you need to touch the number, then select “ok” to let it dial the number. I do this all the time with my Treo 650.

That feature is also available in Windows Mobile 6.0, so it was definitely not “first seen” on the iPhone.

also in the news: typewriters, now have delete key.

I think it’s the “one touch” part that makes it unique. I’ve seen devices with this feature, but all that I’ve seen require a couple of actions, like “selecting” and then “calling”.
