iPhone soon to control unmanned military aircraft

Posted in iPhone by Conner Flynn on June 20th, 2008

iPhone soon to control unmanned military aircraftiPhones will now control aircrafts from the ground, thanks to some geeky iPhone app developers. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley have apparently broken Apple’s terms and conditions when they used the iPhone to guide unmanned aircraft. The Apple Software Developer Kit agreement states that the applications are not to be designed or marketed for automatic or autonomous control of aircraft.

Too late now. And why would they care anyway, they’re having way too much fun. The team uses Mobile Safari to input coordinates and then selects tasks for the unmanned flight that are relayed to the aircraft through a web server. Check out the video below.

Lexon Around Clock

Lexon Around Clock
The Lexon Around Clock isn’t about giving you the precise time. It’s about giving you a rough idea. You’ll know it’s somewhere around 10:45 thanks to the red wire, you just won’t be sure of the exact time. Shunning the traditional clock shape, they’ve basically taken the Price is Right prize wheel, thrown the prizes away and put it on it’s side to give you the time. It’s available for $45.

Rock Paper Scissors League Championship

Rock Paper Scissors League Championship
If you happen to be in Las Vegas this weekend, you might want to check out the 2008 USA Rock Paper Scissors League Championship on June 20 in Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The Champion with the best hand skills will win a $50,000 prize and a ticket to compete in Beijing,China during the Summer Olympics, where they will represent the U.S. in the inaugural International Rock Paper Scissors Federation Championship.

I’ve never been entirely clear on the official rules. It always gets tricky with rock against paper. Paper can wrap around a rock and strangle it, but on the other hand, rock can beat paper to a pulp. Check out the video below. It’s strangely mesmerizing.

Radio City Valve Radio

Radio City Valve Radio
The problem with the Radio City Valve Radio, aside from the fact that it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, is that they just kinda slapped a bunch of stuff together and then went so far as to have a plaque on the front that says “Radio City”. Yeah, we’re going to Radio city. Not.

I’m pretty sure the glass or plastic tubes do nothing except emit that faint light you see. And am I seeing this right? It looks like they just went crazy and threw a heatsink behind them for pure kicks. Only our friends in China could show such a lack of style. I mean, the whole deal just looks unfinished and very toy-like.

Chapter One watch from Maîtres du Temps
The Chapter One watch from Maîtres du Temps is a collaboration between three leading watch designers, Christophe Claret, Peter Speake-Marin, and Roger Dubuis. It shows. This watch is a real looker. Plus, the Chapter One has a tourbillon, retrograde GMT and date indicators, with a mono-pusher chronograph and 60-minute totalizer.

One of the coolest and simpler features is the pair of rolling displays that show the day of the week and the moon phase. Prepare to be broke after buying this beauty. It’s a limited edition of only 33, which immediately jacks the price skyhigh. It will cost you just under $400,000.

Retro Space Invaders headphones

Retro Space Invaders headphones
Who doesn’t love Space Invaders? Answer: Those being invaded of course. Say you’re chillin’ in your room, by the gentle light of your Space Invaders lamp. Just outside your window, the moonlight gently illuminates their latest message to Earth. Soon the invasion will begin. But you don’t need to worry about that. Not after selling out your entire race. You will be spared and given your own island in the Bahamas.

What better way to drown out the sound of human extinction, then by donning a pair of retro Space Invaders headphones. They can be pre-ordered and will ship in mid-late October 2008 for $19.90. They’re free to traitors.

Guitar Hero World Tour’s new guitar

Guitar Hero World Tour’s new guitar
Most of you have heard the rumors about a touchpad on the new guitar, well now we get to see it for real. IGN previewed the new gear, and they say that the strip will be used for notes during sustains, tapping to play notes, and interfacing with the new music creator.

Interestingly, the guitar is larger than those that have come before it. Back to the drums. They’re pressure sensitive, with a plain jane mic, and the music creation software is apparently very awesome. Sadly, you can’t record vocals for songs though. The Wii version of the game will have all of the same features, which is good news for Wii owners.

Lego Death Star featuring classic scenes from A New Hope
This has got to be the coolest Star Wars Lego creation ever. This my friends is a $400 Death Star, comprised of nearly 4,000 pieces and yes, it is available to order. Go change your nerd pants. I’ll wait.

It shows off 14 classic scenes from the Death Star from the original trilogy. Comes with 25 mini-figs and droids that seem more awesome then usual. You know what you must do geeks. Go without a few comics, pull an extra shift, see if mom will let you slide on this month’s basement rent.

Google Sari: Your search reveals lady parts beneath

Google Sari is searchable by a good frisk
The Sari is a traditional piece of clothing originally worn by Indian women. The Google Sari is a designer’s attempt at being clever. Of course, if Google doesn’t appreciate it, your Sari may turn into a genuine sorry. It’s from designer Satya Paul, who showed the Google sari in one of his recent shows. Very clever. Or maybe not. I can’t decide. I can’t wait for his next attempt, which is probably iPhone inspired and called the Safari Sari or something. Maybe a see-through sari called Microsoft Touch. That one would be trouble.

Apple’s iTunes store serves 5 billionth song

Posted in iTunes by Darrin Olson on June 19th, 2008

Apple iTunes reaches over 5 billion songs downloadedApple is touting themselves as the world’s largest online music retailer and these numbers are tough to argue with. As of Thursday the company announced that iTunes has reached the 5 billion mark and beyond for the number of online song downloads since their launch in 2003. It seems like it was only a year ago that they reached the 3 billion mark. In fact it was not quite a year go last July when they announced they had reached 3 billion downloaded songs.

To get an idea of just how many songs that is, customers had to have downloaded a little over 2.5 million songs per day on average since the site launched. In reality 2 billion of these were done in just the last 10 months, making it over 6 million per day for the past year.

Shocker ATM Bank keeps your money safeIf you’re worried about greedy relatives stealing your money, the Shocker ATM Bank should cure the problem. When you put money in it, it will yell “Eeeeee!” for some reason. I guess it’s happy for you and your financial situation. The bank will also know the difference between all coins between 1 and 500 Yen, and will display the total amount saved so you don’t have to count it yourself.

Comes with a security card and an individual pin number. It will cost you $30, but it will cost your family several nasty shocks before they learn to keep their mitts off. It also has alarm clock and calculator functions. Hands off my yen mofo!

Disney Innovention Dream Home is geek heaven

Disney Innovention Dream Home is geek heaven
The new Disney Innoventions Dream Home features tons of high-tech candy inside that would make any self-respecting geek wet his pants. The home is for show and to showcase everything within, offering you a hands-on experience with lots of awesome emerging technologies. Actors will be playing the fictional Elias family, equipped with RFID tags, so that when they enter a room, different lighting will be displayed, while soundtracks play.

It’s also got dozens of LCD picture frames networked, that will display different pictures based on who walks into the room. How about a magic mirror in the daughter’s room that puts virtual outfits on the user in real time? The younger son’s room has two projectors plus a bunch of automation to make the story of Peter Pan come alive (a canon even fires virtual projectiles at the wall). Sounds like you would never grow up living in that house.

Pedal powered Tennis Ball launcher

Pedal Power Tennis ball launching bikeLet’s say you’re riding your bike around town and suddenly you have the urge to launch tennis balls at something or someone. Thanks to this inventor, you can satisfy that urge and launch away. It’s completely eco-friendly too, built from two recycled bikes, scrap steel and wood, even a leaking water jug and a lacrosse stick.

Pretty simple but genius way to make a tennis ball launcher. As you pedal the bike, you power 2 other bike wheels that launch the balls. Perfect if you like to ride your bike to the Tennis court. Or just blast pedestrians and the like.
