Nintendo again dominates sales, Wii shortage ensues |
According to the latest NPD Group report for game sales in May, this is the fourth month in a row that Nintendo has come out on top for the number 1 AND number two spot for console sales. The Nintendo Wii and the handheld Nintendo DS were the two top-selling hardware units for May, 2008.
Nintendo sold over 675,000 Wii consoles in May and almost 453,000 Nintendo DS’s, which would probably explain all the new colors and designs they have been coming out with lately for the DS. Sony’s Playstation 3 followed with a little under 209,000 units sold and Microsoft sold 186,600 Xbox 360 units during the same period.
It should be no surprise that the number one game sold in May was Take-Two’s Grand Theft Auto IV which launched in April and sold 871,000 copies in May bringing software sales up 41% from this time last year. Total software sales for the month was almost $540 million. Surprisingly though, the NPD Group analysts feel that the launch of GTA IV did not have a very positive impact on console sales as of yet, but of course there is still time for people to get out and buy a console. Overall sales of games, consoles and accessories had a 37% increase from May of 2007 with a total of $1.12 billion in sales.
A lot of the Nintedo Wii’s success lately can be attributed to the newly launched Wii Fit balance board controller. According to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, we are faced with more shortages for the Wii game console, which is a situation that has worked well for him thus far. Fils-Aime did say that they do hope to get the supply and demand of the console back to a more “balanced” situation, however. Get it? Balanced? Ah, that Reggie is a funny guy…
