Windows XP Service Pack 3 still rocky, reboot loop |
Once Microsoft finally released Windows XP Service Pack 3 to the Automatic Update after a last minute delay you might think the worst is over, but for many it doesn’t look like that’s necessarily the case. As the release has been rolling out to computers around the world there have been a number of reports with problems as you might expect with any major service pack, but one issue seems to be quite a bit more prevalent than the others.
According to ComputerWorld there have been many reports of an “endless reboot” problem that has been flooding forums with no real specific reason or response from Microsoft. One of the theories is that computers running AMD processors with XP are the ones having the problem, but the issue is not exclusive to AMD. Microsoft has said that problem comes from computer makers who used the wrong XP images to load the OS on AMD machines. HP, who was not named specifically by Microsoft, fired back saying that SP3 added a driver that was not previously present which causes the problem.
The endless reboot issue involves the computer hitting an error when trying to start up after installing the latest service pack, and then automatically rebooting upon failure. In many cases the process happens too fast to catch and boot into safe mode or get to the BIOS to stop the cycle.
Steve Bass from PC World posted some steps and pre-installation instructions to follow to help safely upgrade your XP OS to Service Pack 3, but this news certainly curtails my excitement about getting the latest update, even if there is a chance of better performance. Once SP3 shows up in your automatic updates it might not be a bad idea to follow Microsoft’s steps before installing XP Service Pack 3.

I just received this update and got the endless reboot loop error, here’s how I fixed it: turn off automatic restarts (F8 during startup) and disable intelppm.sys by entering either of the following in the Run Command Prompt:
* reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm /v Start /d 4 /t REG_DWORD
* sc config intelppm start= disabled
I also have problem when install Windows XP SP3, after installation finish, This problem is about GDI32.DLL.
Boot with CD Windows installation, then start with repair console, then copy gdi32.dll from \i386\gdi32.dll to c:\windows\system32\gdi32.dll
Thank you, The first reply worked to fix my problem
Dude,
I figured that I would be the only person on the planet upgrading an XP system to SP3 in 2009 but these comments are recent.
I have an AMD 64 athalon box that I just brought outta semi retirement and it instantly started auto updating to SP3.
I ended up in the endless boot loop and darned if the first comment “sc config” option didn’t fix it right up.
I have computer skills but I’m no techy. Thanks to those of you that are smart enough to figure this stuff out and generous enough to spend the time breaking it down into bite size pieces for the rest of us.
I can’t install SP3. My system said it’s partially updated. I tried twice but the same problem occurred. My computer is so slow afterward.
Then, should I install service pack 3 on my XP or not?
What problems will occur and what are the benefits?

After service pack 3 was installed on my computer (windows xp professional) I’ve had problems getting my computer to boot . Today it won’t come on at all! I’m borrowing someone else’s computer to type this.
Here is the message I’m getting today:
IDE-0 not found
CD/DVD 0 not found
CD/DVD 1 not found
it goes to another screen, there are a lot of words and numbers and at the bottom of the scree is:
RPL-Rom FFC: It counts up to 50
then
I get a blank screen. Not blue it looks like the computer is off even though it’s still making noise and the green light at the on/off switch is still on.
Could someone please tell what to so about this?

L7,
How am I supposed to disable intppm.sys if I can’t even get to a command prompt? My PC is stuck in an endless restart loop; if I press F8, then what? If it get the blue screen of death, I can’t do anytyhing there. So exactly how do I disable intelppm.sys. I can’t get anywhere to type anything in like this.
HElP!!!!
Raul Abella: I looked at hundreds of sites, saying the same thing that you said, but I always got incorrect parameters. The way that you had it written worked perfectly! Thank you so much!
I should make it clear that I am not big on conspiracy theories or anything of the sort as a prelude to what I am about to say. I have been an avid miscrosft user for two decades. I believe in the beginning their efforts were customer based and they were quick to fix the problems with previous OS’S when they becasme aware of them. It cannot, in my opinion, be an accident that the worlds leading manufacturer of computer software, has all these problems with their latest Service pack. I believe that they intended the debaucle to occur in an affort for their customers to upgrade to Vista.
The problems were intentional in my opinion. Now, they are discontinuing support for XP SP2,which only confirms to me what I have already suggested to be the case.
as for this customer, I will no longer take my business to microsoft. They have become too greedy and lost sight of the importance of customer satisfaction which ought to be any corporations prime directive.
Think I may go MAC!!
To JT, The intppm.sys don’t exist in WinXP.. However, there is a file called The intelppm.sys is a Processor Device Driver for intel…
RENAME intelppm.sys intelppm.orig
press enter
8 . Then copy the intelppm.sys from C:\WINDOWS\SERVICEPACKFILES\I386\ to the system folder with the right command parameters:
CD C:\WINDOWS\SERVICEPACKFILES\I386\
press enter
COPY intelppm.sys C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\
press enter
To restart the computer type EXIT then press enter
ThanX JF,
Me too.. It happened to me .. Then I realized I have to write down every step I made while I was troubleshooting the problem… All the best.
I’ll be emigrating to Win7 64bit soon..
Uninstalled sp3 like Microsoft’s website suggested and it is still looping at start-up. It appears to have uninstalled sp3 because when I now go to SafeMode it shows (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254: Service Pack 2) listed at the top of the screen. Tried to use one of the other methods they suggested but cant do it now since it is uninstalled. Any suggestions?
