Ecoffins let you die green, look like wicker

Ecoffins let you die green, look like wicker
While many Funeral Directors would try to sell you the most expensive hermetically sealed casket to bury your loved one in, it’s actually a natural process that our bodies return to the Earth and decompose.

Why not choose a biodegradable casket from Ecoffins. Sure, it looks like something that Ewoks built. Kinda looks like wicker too. But looks aren’t everything. It’s all about a healthy respect for the environment. These are built from renewable natural woods like bamboo and willow, with no toxic glues and metal fittings, and many Ecoffins are made in a fair trade factory in China. They even pack them inside of each other with different sizes to reduce the environmental effects of shipping. Ecoffin also makes environmentally friendly pet sized caskets too.

Mega-Sonic Scatter-Cat Repeller

Mega-Sonic Scatter-Cat Repeller
Here’s the perfect way to look like a dork while scaring off pesky varmints from your property. The Mega-Sonic Scatter-Cat Repeller looks like a megaphone because it is a megaphone. It might have been cooler if they actually made it look like a gun, but they wanted to laugh at those who use it. To use it, just point it at the cat, bird, dog, squirrel or other critter and pull the trigger. An ultrasonic signal that’s undetectable to the human ear will scare off the animal from up to 65 feet away. It may take a few blasts before the animal gets the hint, but they will leave you alone.

It even has a laser sight that’s activated when you pull the trigger, so that you know the signal is being aimed in the right direction. Interestingly, it can also be switched to a sonic signal that can be heard by humans. That way, those damn kids can get the hell off your lawn.

Fagor TP-2006 X Flat Toaster

Fagor TP-2006 X Flat Toaster
This toaster tosses convention completely out the window. The Fagor TP-2006 X is a flat toaster and it looks way cooler than traditional ones. It also makes for a dangerous breakfast time. It’s probably not good for those with a house full of kids who like sticking their hands in objects.

Like other toasters, the Fagor TP-2006 X comes with a crumb tray that can be slid out. It’s clearly begging to have a burger on it’s grill as well, though I’m sure they do not recommend it. Looks like it can fit four slices of bread on it’s surface at once. It’s got me rethinking everything. If we can have a flat toaster, surely we can have a George Foreman grill that stands upright.

Wireless Penguin mouse flattened by steamroller
The wireless Penguin mouse appears to be geared toward those with a love for cartoon Penguins flattened by steamrollers. Now you can live that moment forever and navigate webpages with this somewhat flat and flightless bird. He’s even wearing a scarf.

Whether you love Chilly Willy or Penguins from any of the numerous recent cgi movies, I think you might be pleasantly disturbed to use this day in and day out. The USB Wireless Penguin Mouse comes in black or blue and only costs $20.

Pioneer launches $1500 in-car amp sure to make the neighbors mad

Pioneer PRS-A900

Car audio is one of those things you love or hate. I’m mostly in the latter category thanks to my neighbor and his booming car stereo he seems incapable of turning down as he pulls up at 2 in the morning. The police in your town may take issue to it as well but if you just have to prove you have the loudest stereo in town, Pioneer has your amp.

Pioneer announced its new Premier PRS-A900 amp today and it is hella expensive at $1500. Pioneer says that it had the goal of ultimate performance despite the price tag and it shows. For $1500 you might expect a bazillion watts of power and you would be wrong.

Elektrobit PDA style Satellite phone

Elektrobit PDA style Satellite phone
Sat phones used to be exclusively for rich Indiana Jones types. Elektrobit is hoping to change that with their new PDA-style satellite phone concept. It’s not only sleek, but they promise it will also be cost competitive with regular cell phones. Elektrobit didn’t skimp on functionality. It’s got Windows Mobile 6.1 professional, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, VoIP, touch screen, voice control, 3MP camera and both HSDPA and satellite connectivity.

You might notice the lack of an antenna on this one too. If this does come to market as planned in 2009, it’s sure to be a hit. It’s designed to be compatible with the Terrestar satellite network, which has not been launched yet. If the satellite network launches as planned they should do well with this one.

Pioneer in dash navigation unit

Pioneer over the weekend announced new additions to its line up of AVIC-F advanced in-dash navigators. These new offerings, which join the AVIC-F500BT shown off at CES, are the AVIC-F700BT, AVIC-F900BT and Premier branded AVIC-F90BT. Pricing is set at $850, $1,100 and $1,200, respectively, and all units will be available in June.

Pioneer is describing these in-dash units as going “beyond navigation” by offering “enhanced navigation and entertainment features paired with sophisticated voice control.” While you may read that however you choose there is no doubt Pioneer has packed these units with a ton of features, including “Apple iPod connectivity, Bluetooth, MSN Direct, HD radio, XM and SIRIUS Satellite Radio, single CD, DVD video playback and compressed audio and video playback through USB and SD memory devices.”

For the full details, check out the press release after the jump. These Pioneer units definitely look to be the cause of many wonderful distractions as you cruise down the open roads.

DPMP-003 3-inch PMP packs NES action

DPMP-003 3-inch PMP packs NES action
As far as I’m concerned you don’t have to work real hard to give me a good PMP as long as it has some NES emulation action and some decent slide-out controls. Put in a 3-inch LCD, TV-out and a 1.3 megapixel camera and I’m there.

In fact, Shenzhen Derisson’s portable gaming PMP is the first device of its kind to boast a built-in camera, as far as I know. The camera is not a webcam but a real photo shooter. Plus, you have the option to make it a 2 megapixel or 3 megapixel. The device will even record scheduled TV programs according to the specs. It supports NES games and ASF format MEPG-4 videos.

Microsoft adds a new twist to handhelds

Microsoft adds a new twist to handhelds
Are you content with simple multi-touch and built-in accelerometers? Microsoft Research thinks not. In fact they’re already working hard in the labs, toward integrating force-sensing technology. The kind of thing that will enable gestures and let you twist on-screen imagery without making UMPCs out of flexible material.

Those behind the idea feel that such tech would “turn an otherwise passive component that just holds the device together into an active input surface.” Auditory cues might even enable users to be alerted when they’ve applied enough pressure to cause a change. I just figure it’s a great way to play Rubik’s Cube in the future.

Microsoft wants you to visit “Albany,” aka, HELL

Albany The Egg building

A rather strange landmark of the Albany, New York skyline is The Egg, a local performing arts venue. This oddly designed building could well be an omen for Microsoft’s freshly announced “Albany” subscription service – a big, fat laid egg.

Albany, as discussed by Microsoft product manager Bryson Gordon, will be an all you can eat service for consumers which gives them all the Microsoft goodness they can handle under one desktop. You can, for x amount of dollars, gain access to Office Home and Student 2007, Windows Live OneCare and Windows Live Mail, Messenger and Photo Gallery. This is on top of security updates and the like.

Homer Simpson floating radio complete with Duff

Homer Simpson floating radio
It’s not quite summer yet, but if you have your pool ready to go, this floating Homer Simpson radio will let you listen to your favorite AM or FM radio station while you take it easy. Like you, Homer floats on his back with a can of Duff parked on his gut and not a care in the cartoon world.

The Duff can is used to tune the radio and adjust the volume. Apparently, he’s waterproof and requires a set of AAA batteries to run. He will cost you $40.

World’s first quadruple-neck guitar

World’s first quadruple-neck guitar
This guitar requires at least four times the skill of your normal rocker. It would be great for the alien band that has a few more limbs then most. With this baby you can be a one man bluegrass band with guitar, bass, mandolin and banjo all in one. I’m guessing the weight will destroy your collar bone though.

One of these monstrosities sold on eBay earlier this month for $255, which is insanely cheap, even when you consider the $134.98 shipping fee. It’s probably just as well, it’s gotta be a pain in the ass to restring this thing. You are NOT a guitar hero until you master this baby.

DIY uWatch: the scientific calculator wristwatch

DIY uWatch: the scientific calculator wristwatch
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a scientific calculator wristwatch. They haven’t been around for about 20 years or so. Dave Jones remembers them well: “Back in 1987 or so I got a Casio CFX-400 scientific calculator watch, and I wore that watch to death for 10 years until the band support on the case broke. The CFX-400 was the best, and last scientific calculator watch ever sold.”

So if you’re like Dave, and has missed the calculator watch, there’s good news. He’s revived the scientific calculator wristwatch as a DIY project. His uWatch features a roomy LCD that can display 16 characters across, two lines deep, and it can handle all your fancy RPN/Algebraic scientific needs. You’ll need at least a bit of technical know-how to pull it off, but in the end you’ll have an awesome geek wristwatch that’ll catch the eye of lady nerds.
