Novatel announces a pair of HSPA USB modems

Posted in USB by Shane McGlaun on April 1st, 2008

Novatel MC992DJust ask anyone who knows me; I can hardly stand to be without Internet access. If my connection goes down I begin to get cold chills at the thought of missing an email within five minutes. To stave off an Internet restricted diet in case of emergency I have my iPhone and laptop complete with EVDO modem to keep me from being offline.

I have often considered getting a USB EVDO modem for use with my desktop computer, but haven’t bitten the bullet and done that yet. Novatel Wireless introduced a couple new USB modems today that look very tempting. The MC992D and MC990D are both wireless broadband modems that can operate on multiple frequencies including HSPA, WCDMA, EDGE and GPRS networks.

Sound ID announces HD300 Bluetooth headset

Sound ID HD300I’m not a big fan of Bluetooth headsets in most instances. Sure they are welcome and much safer when driving in a car than holding your phone up to your ear. However, when you are walking around at the mall just stop being lazy and put the phone up to your ear so we don’t all think you are crazy.

That said I realize some people won’t stop using them when walking at the mall, so this is for you. Sound ID announced its latest Bluetooth headset today called the HD300. Sound ID says that the device was created with the help of hearing specialists and top acoustic scientists.

John West and his Centro SmartphoneTypical smartphones run well into the $500 range making them more than many cell phone users are willing to spend. Despite the high cost of smartphones they remain one of the fastest growing segments of mobile handset sells.

Palm bucked the trend of expensive smartphones when it released its Centro handset last September as a Sprint exclusive device. The phone sold for only $99 with new activation. In February 2008 AT&T started to carry the Centro and also sold the device for $99.

Caracol one handed keyboard concept

Caracol one handed keyboard concept
The Caracol one handed keyboard concept is a computer keyboard that absolutely throws convention to the wind and takes a new approach to simplify typing. You can type fast with one hand. Caracol uses a rotary keyboard on a wheel through which you slip your palm.

The keywheel rests on a nice ergonomic pad. The loop has a 5:1 gearbox which enables it to rotate even with a small movement of the palm. So, you can access all the keys quickly and type almost without thought as you find the keys automatically falling to your fingers, rather then your fingers seeking them. It’s a concept for now, but this one looks like it has real promise.

Measure ball speed with the Glove Radar

Measure ball speed with the Glove Radar
When you’re playing a game of catch, a radar gun isn’t exactly the most convenient way to measure a ball’s speed. The Glove Radar is an affordable way to measure how much heat your friend is throwing your way. It attaches to the back of your glove with a weather-resistant nylon cord. Sure, it looks dorky, but what are ya gonna do?

It uses microwave Doppler technology to measure the ball’s speed as it approaches. When the ball arrives you’ll see it’s speed indicated in mph on the LCD display. The Radar is powered by a single 3V lithium battery, which isn’t rechargeable, but it’s good for about 5,000 speed measurements. You’ll probably be bored with it long before then.

Dynamo Green keyboard uses kinetic energy

Dynamo Green keyboard uses kinetic energy
The Dynamo Green Keyboard is a pretty pretty interesting one. Supposedly it helps you lower your monthly power bill, but there’s one catch. You have to keep typing. That’s because it has the capability of harnessing the power of kinetic energy when typing, turning the energy into electricity, which will then help power the computer you’re using.

It’s a neat idea, but I think you would have to be a speed typer who never removes your fingers from the keys in order to get the job done. And how much would you save? I think what we have here is a cool keyboard that may or may not glow like it’s radioactive, for £59.99.

Sing on key with the SoundTech Vocal Trainer
Any aspiring American Idol hopefuls that want to approve their voice but don’t like Karaoke, might want to try this device. Not everyone can afford a vocal coach, plus you probably shouldn’t inflict your voice on others.

This high quality dynamic microphone plugs into your laptop and uses software to measure your range and pitch. That way you can improve on it and hopefully try out in front of the Idol crew one day, only to have Simon tell you that your singing sounds like a drawn out fart. It has 20 tutorials and a tripod to sit on your desk, plus it comes with 12 songs and you can download more. It wll cost you $89.99.

The CatBox 360: Games for cats

The CatBox 360: Games for cats
Cats want games too. If your cat wants to get into some gaming action, now they can thanks to the CatBox 360. When your cat steps into the automatic litter box, a new game is activated and a random music track begins. Colored indicators scroll down the LCD screen like in Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

When the cat’s paws scratch across the litter, it triggers the notes, and every time your cat “answers nature’s call” in the litter box, the game enters a bonus multiplier mode for extra points. Some tunes include: Cat Scratch Fever, Stray Cat Strut, and of course, Cool for Cats. The makers of the game warn that a handful of cats have started “doing their business” whenever they hear music playing, so be careful when you use your stereo. You may have a clean up waiting for you. No price or release date yet. Don’t hold your breath…Or do hold your breath since your cat won’t be able to stop playing.

Colorware now pimping Guitar Hero axes
Colorware isn’t content to just make your PSP’s and Nintendo DS look awesome. Now they want to spruce up your Guitar Hero axe. I have to say, it looks pretty awesome.

The service is available for the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. New users can score one for as little as $198, while current thrashers can send their guitar in and get it colorized for as little as $99. If you are on a budget, don’t even go look at the eye candy, because you won’t be able to help yourself.

ThinkGeek Pii Pii Brothers for Wii

Posted in Wii by Shane McGlaun on April 1st, 2008

ThinkGeek Pii Pii BrothersThinkGeek is neigh legendary for its April fool’s Day pranks and this year they have one, though it could actually be a real product that sells. The game is called Pii Pii Brothers for the Wii and includes (if it were real) a special thong that places the Wii remote where a dudes Johnson would be.

The premise is that the game would let a lady know how it is to pee like a man with bathrooms ranging from bars to palaces according to the description. The goal is to control a continuous stream of urine and try to get as little as possible on the floor and pee on various animals that pop out of the toilets.
