Plextor forgets HD DVD is dead, releases Blu-ray HD DVD combo drives

Plextor Blu-ray combo driveI for one was sort of glad that Blu-ray finally won the format wars, though I was bummed that I had just bought a HD DVD player. Now you can’t even buy or rent HD DVD flicks in my local area so that fancy Toshiba HD DVD player is a brick.

I guess someone forgot to tell Plextor that the format wars were over. Plextor announced a couple new hybrid drives yesterday that can play both HD formats. I guess those of us who got the five free HD DVDs still need some way to play them.

The Plextor B920SA retails for $599 and can play both Blu-ray and HD DVD movies as well as write to Blu-ray, CD and DVD media. The Plextor B300Sa can playback both Blu-ray and HD DVD films but loses its ability to write to Blu-ray media. It can write to CD and DVD though. The loss of Blu-ray writing capability lowers the price to $499. Both drives use the SATA interface for connecting internally to your computer.
