Elves the world over mourn: D&D’s Gygax has passed |
How many of us consider ourselves at least part geek? And being part geek means you’ve probably played D&D at some point, right? From that angle therefore we report with sad news that Dungeons & Dragons co-founder Gary Gygax has passed away today at age 69.
As we’ve reported on sister blog Pop Therapy, Gygax of late had been in poor health. During his heyday Gygax had an amazing contribution to the world of fantasy role playing games with his co-development of the uber-popular Dungeons & Dragons brand. His and Dave Arneson’s work in the old days of TSR made D&D the cornerstone of the modern fantasy RPG movement - you can see hints of its glory in almost any computer role playing game you enjoy today.
Gygax has not been directly involved with D&D development for some time, but his influence as Uncle Gary could still be felt whenever one opened up a Dungeon Master’s Guide. Roll a 20 for us one more time, will you Gary?

In honor of the Uber Game Master.
Gary Gygax was a man with a dream,
To creat a world that few have seen.
A land so vast as far as you can see,
Never ending adventures for you and me.
We all listen as the story unfolds,
Watching the Dungeon Master with his wicked rolls.
He annouced out loud in a booming voice,
“You are all faced with a difficult choice.”
We stand strong with weapons in hand,
Fighting for our lives in anyway we can.
We slash, dodge, parry and slay,
The dark elves and demons until we’re out of the fray.
But one creature is left standing among the dead,
Wearing a dark hooded cloak and an aura of dread.
Pinpoints of light deep within its hollowed gaze,
Followed with a wicked grin as it points through the haze.
As we all look beyond the hills and across the land
To see our loving Dungeon Master’s fate at hand.
We fought the shrouded creature,
Through and through,
But our weapons are useless
There is nothing we can do.
The creature then waved a hand across its face
Revealing a beautiful angel with a look of loving grace.
Dropping her dark cloak, as she mourns for our loss,
And expressed her concerns, “Please don’t feel coss.”
“I’m charged to do my duty by the command upon high”
“His Mastering skills are needed else where,”
“And It’s a serious charge he cannot deny.”
“He played the game and knows the rule of how things need to be.”
“His adventure is not over, he merely leveled up.”
“Just wait young player, someday you too shall see.”
With that thought
We all stand tall
Carrying a torch in his honor
So his dreams shall never fall.
Game On!
