Kenetic cell phone concept powered by your moves

Posted in Concepts by Darrin Olson on February 14th, 2008

Atlas Kinetic Cell Phone ConceptHere’s a pretty cool conceptual idea for a cell phone powered by kinetic energy. The Atlas Kiinetic Cell Phone has a mechanism in the center behind some glass that you can actually see work. As you move the phone around, a weighted piece rotates around to wind up a spring which powers the phone.

According to the designer, only a few times of turning the phone upside down and back will power it up. This same kinetic type of mechanism works great to power watches and is actually not that uncommon. The only difference is that watches for the most part need very little power to run compared to a phone.

Strapya mini solar cell phone charger
Here’s another great gadget for those who are environmentally conscious. The Strapya mini solar cell phone charger is smaller than an iPod, and when it has 6-10 hours of sunlight it becomes a dependable backup power source for your cell phone.

It hooks up to your phone using an adapter and you can get 3 hours of energy. Not only is it useful and environmentally friendly, but the price is not outrageous at about $17.54. So it wont “Strapya” for cash. And hey, sunlight is free.

Dual Pizza oven: pizza in 90 seconds or less

Posted in Home by Conner Flynn on February 14th, 2008

Dual Pizza oven
As if by magic, this Dual Pizza Oven can take your dinner from a pile of dough with cheese and toppings to a steaming pizza in 90 seconds. That’s cooking two 12-inch pizzas simultaneously, not just one. Obviously frozen pizzas would take a bit longer, but still this is awesome news. The microwave is fast, but microwave pizza is terrible.

This oven combines 1440-watt coil heating elements with ceramic pizza stones. This distributes the heat evenly. The only thing we are unsure of is how it would fare with frozen pizza. That’s the only way this is a time saver, because if you’re making your own fresh pizza from scratch, you are investing way too much in the process and might as well open a Pizza shop. If you are the kind to pay $249.95 for a dual pizza oven, that may not be a bad idea.

Nerf Wii Blaster: a Wii gun that fires darts

Nerf Wii Blaster
Nerf and the the Zapper now have a love child, thanks to a new partnership between Electronic Arts and Hasbro. They’ve revealed Nerf N-Strike for the Nintendo Wii and DS systems, along with a Wiimote-based Nerf blaster. Nerf’s Wii blaster isn’t the usual Nintendo Zapper clone. That’s because it doubles as a functional Nerf dart gun. Just stick the Wiimote in the Nerf gun grip and it becomes a game controller, or load it with a Nerf blaster module to fire foam darts at your friends.

The Nerf N-Strike games and the blaster are scheduled to ship in Fall 2008. There should be more details from Hasbro at next week’s Toy Fair in New York. Here’s an idea, maybe they can shove a Wiimote in a Nerf football and have it communicate with the Wii.

Automania chocolate tools for Valentine’s Day
It’s easy to find a gift for your special lady friend on Valentine’s day. Usually the tried and true method of flowers, chocolates or diamonds will do. But what is a good gift that the gals can give us guys on Valentine’s day, that is manly yet shows love?

Tools are always good. And we like chocolate just as much as you girls. Why not combine the two? These chocolate tools are called Automania, and consist of bolts, nuts, screws, pliers and spanners. They are made of Belgian couverture chocolate. They are made by Japanese chocolatier, Frantz. The entire set will only cost you about $30. It might be a bit late to import this from Japan this year, but next year you’ll be ready.

Eight-wheeling H2 Hummer limousine

H2 Hummer Limousine with three rear axles and eight wheelsThe Ferrari Limo is probably better suited for speed to get you to the club on time, but this H2 Hummer limousine with its triple axle setup gives you your own club on wheels.

This super-duty stretched version of the already-huge Hummer rolls on eight 22′s and hauls around 2 VIP lounges, disco floors and ceilings, some custom gull-wing doors in back and a level-5 sounds system. Take a look at a photo of the interior after the jump, which appears to be as roomy as they get. No details are given about how many people it can hold, but we’re guessing it’s enough.

Philips 9@9j has a AAA backup battery

AAA backup battery
Even though we don’t see them in most devices, AAA batteries can be pretty darn useful, aside from powering remote controls and toys. Philips thinks so too, that’s why the Philips Xenium 9@9j has a AAA battery slot at the base. This is very likely the first cellphone that supports a AAA battery. It supposedly gives it up to three hours of talk time. It still has the standard lithium ion rechargeable battery, but the AAA is a backup.

It does add some bulk, but what is a backup worth to you? The 9@9j should be around in April. The technology is from the Israeli firm Techtium, and they are calling it Backupower. If your main battery goes dead, the backup battery takes over.

D:Scribe: send texts & emails from your pen
How do you update the pen? It’s been around for centuries, but hasn’t really changed in awhile. Well, one way to update it is to integrate texting and email. The D:Scribe is a design concept from Reuben Png. Similar to Bluetooth pens, it will track as you write, then just circle the person’s name and the text or email is sent digitally via a Bluetooth phone.

You can also access everything you’ve written later because it’s all stored in the pen. The message status is shown on a OLED screen. The pen has always been mightier then the sword, and now it will have texting as well.

Android team releases updated development SDK

Google released new improved SDK for AndroidIn case you’re keeping track of that latest open source development platform for mobile devices called Android , the team just released an updated version based on all the great feedback they’ve received from the early releases of the platform. This latest release got the snappy name of m5-rc14, which I guess seems fitting for a platform named Android.

This version has a UI that is still a work in progress but received a significant update. Also new is the addition of layout animations, new media codecs to support 6 new audio file formats, an improvements to the Eclipse plugin and classes for geo-coding that will let you go both ways, (address to coordinate and coordinate to address for you pervs).

Ultimate gamblers slot-machine watch sells for $625,000
Wynn Las Vegas has sold this one of a kind watch by Girard-Perregaux, one of the oldest and most respected Swiss watch manufacturers in the world. The price? $625,000. The slot machine function is fully functional and fully mechanical. It’s activated by a lever arm on the side. The watch is known as the Vintage 1945 Jackpot Tourbillon. Yes, that’s a ton of money, but they don’t call it gambling for nothing.

This was no easy watch to make. It took nearly three-and-a-half years to develop from concept to production. In all, there are 501 pieces in the watch. Don’t be sad that you missed your chance at this beautiful watch though, the company plans to make 40 similar watches.

Video vests turn you into a walking TV

Video vests turn you into a TVThis Video Vest screen certainly gets your attention. Why carry a boring cardboard sign, when you can get your message across with video, like a picket line for instance or to advertise your business. The Vest actually plays full-motion video with stereo sound so that you have a portable video display anywhere you want.

Apparently regular Joes like me and you can’t buy one due to the vest’s high cost and limited manufacturing, but you can rent one for live events and such. That really sucks because my thinking was that we could put some flat chested girls in this vest and give them a larger rack via video. It would have been my gift to them. I’m a giver.

Dishwasher for guns won’t give you a clean shot

Dishwasher system for cleaning gunsIt will make your guns sparkling clean though. This has Sarah Connor written all over it. If mankind’s future depends on protecting John Connor and forming a resistance against the cyborg threat, you are gonna want your equipment clean and thus less likely to malfunction.

It’s essentially a dishwasher for guns, making it quick and easy to clean them so you can get right back out there and kill stuff. Or whatever it is you do. It will clean up to 10 handguns or 4 long guns at the same time. Clean guns…That’s what will win against SkyNet, no matter how many Terminator’s they send your way.

Ubisoft announces My Weight Loss Coach
It’s nice to see video game companies getting more into fitness, since they are responsible for much of the lard on couches across America. Ubisoft just announced a new title that should be available this summer called My Weight Loss Coach. The game is targeted at both casual and overweight players. The idea is to use customizable coaching sessions and a pedometer accessory to track physical activity.

The pedometer can be synced to the DS, and will help you keep track of daily physical effort, but it also goes a step further, helping you balance your food intake.

The Steve Sleeve for the Macbook Air

Steve Sleeve from Timbuk2 for the Macbook AirTaking a queue from the marketing folks for Apple’s new MacBook Air, Timbuk2 has announced the Steve Sleeve. The thin case designed specifically for the notebook resembles the manila envelope that Apple uses in their commercials and that Steve Jobs used to originally present the Macbook Air.

Timbuk2 assures us that when the Steve Sleeve actually starts shipping in March we’ll find that it’s much tougher than a standard manila enveloper, however. It has a soft low-pile fleece lining (from recycle-ready poly no less), an exterior made from the same stuff as mountaineering jackets, ultrasonic welds on the seems and brushed (recyclable) aluminum buttons.
