modu claims title of world’s first modular phone

modu1.jpgEnvision if you will for a moment a mobile phone which lets you change it up somehow so that it meets your “changing needs, preferences and style- easily and affordably.” That is the idea behind a new mobile phone ecosystem announced today which is called modu.

Several sets of products make up this new ecosystem. At the core is the modu itself, a tiny mobile phone. This modu phone can be used enclosed in design focused phone enclosures called modu jackets and enhanced via modu mates – products from mainstream consumer electronics manufacturers who will be developing special MP4 players, digital photo frames, cameras and DECT phones, among other items.

modu has already seen some success in getting partners, naming car multimedia and navigation company Blaupunkt and music company Universal Music Group as early signers. Blaupunkt will of course develop a modu mate, while UMG creates “stylish and customized modu jackets.” The mobile phone company said to expect its products from “excited” mobile operators by the end of the year.

Looks pretty cool. It needs a keyring link though.
