PSP 3.80 firmware upgrade to bring radio, more feeds

Posted in PSP, Sony by Darrin Olson on December 13th, 2007

Sony PSP 3.80 firmware upgrade will bring streaming radio, photo feeds and moreFirmware upgrades for the Sony PSP usually don’t have changes that are incredibly drastic but for some reason I still get pretty excited any time they come out. It’s almost like getting a slightly new gadget each time, even though I still have the older, fat PSP. Anytime I hear of any upgrade on the way I’ll check for it using the utility on the PSP daily, since most of the time I can get it there before it’s officially released.

Version 3.80 however does promise to bring something pretty cool - streaming internet radio. The update will allow the PSP to pick up streams of online radio broadcasts in the same format that it supports such as Shoutcast MP3 streams. The upgrade will also expand its feed-reading capabilities the ability to pick up “photocasts” from RSS feeds. It will also allow users to import OPML feed lists from other feed readers to import the same feeds on the handheld console.

Another recent firmware upgrade helped improve navigation through videos by scrolling through scenes in a timeline, and now that will be even more granular in version 3.80 with the ability to scroll through individual scenes. If you happen to live in Japan or any other place with 1Seg broadcasting you can also hook up your 1seg antenna and use the PSP as a DVR. That feature is way cool but unfortunately useless to us here in the states.

Japan is expected to get the 3.80 firmware upgrade on December 18th and it applies to both the fat and slim versions of the PSP. The English version should be coming out shortly after that but you can bet I’ll be checking every day until then. If I get the update early I’ll be sure to let you know.

  8. sonicburger Says:

DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS UPDATE IT BLOWS FOR THE FOLLOWING REASON…

i hope most of u are fimiliar with .cso files u can download them from bit-torrent …they are full games that u can get for free and this new firmwire does not support this file type because sony made it like that so people can only play legal content on there psp

  9. jbardi Says:

sonicburger, that is a blatant lie. Check your facts before making such broad claims.

Sony’s official releases never allowed you to directly play CSO/ISO files from Retail UMD rips. You always had to have custom firmware to do so. Sony’s official firmware still supports CSO/ISO files as they have some available from their own servers to be downloaded and played, so they would not break their own ISO files with the 3.80 update.

Dax (Dark Alex) is releasing the custom firmware 3.80 M33 today, January 11th, and it STILL plays ALL CSO/ISO files.

Besides, the people on this forum, outside of a few of them, are not using custom firmware and are discussing the features of the update to PSPs with official firmware. Which means most of the users above were never able to play ripped CSO/ISO files anyway.

Again, get your facts straight before you start your doomsday messages.
