Painting your CDs just got a lot cheaper

Posted in Printers by Chetz on November 15th, 2007

dymo discpainter makes disc artworkSure you could design and print off your own labels for any burned DVDs or CDs that you make but why bother when you have a Sharpie pen within easy grasp? For those of you that aren’t as filled with sloth as ourselves and are also on a budget Dymo’s DiscPainter offers an affordable alternative to those expensive CD printers out there. For a cost of $279 you get a printing station that can produce high quality disc artwork and it only takes one minute of wait time to do so. The software that comes with the printer is compatible with all of the other major art programs like Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator so you don’t need to worry about compatibility issues. Amazingly it only weighs a little over two-and-a-half pounds and is about as compact as today’s average printers. The Dymo DiscPainter hasn’t arrived on the market yet but should be here soon so start brushing up on your Photoshop skillz.

No soy sauce here, just R2D2 to tuck you into your bed

Posted in Projectors,Star Wars by Chetz on November 15th, 2007

R2D2 night light projectorIf you’re looking for something new to match with your “Star Wars” bedsheets, wallpaper and pajamas and that R2-D2 soy sauce bottle we told you about isn’t good for your bedroom then here is the droid that you have been looking for.

National Console Support is releasing an R2-D2 night light projector that will give you images of “Star Wars” goodness to drift off into dreamland while watching. Running off of two AAA batteries the projector will display moving vistas of the Death Star, an X-wing spaceship and Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon on your bedroom ceiling. Best of all the projector comes in two different models: the blue R2-D2 version or a red R2-M5 version if you actually like the “Star Wars” prequels over the original movie trilogy. The little guy’s legs move too and the dome flips over to reveal the projector (you didn’t think that the hologram projector was functional did you?)

Creative: 25 million MP3 players served

Posted in Creative,News by Nino Marchetti on November 14th, 2007

creative-25million.jpgNow we know damm well Apple’s iPod is the big king of the hill when it comes to portable media players. More of these puppies are in the hands of listeners than we can even think about. It’s good though now and again to remember the other companies left in Apple’s dust, especially when they mark a decent milestone of their own.

Creative is in that ballpark now, we think. The company said today it has now shipped a total of 25 million MP3 players. It is said to be as well the world’s second largest MP3 player company in global unit shipments. Creative debuted ts first NOMAD flash memory-based player in 1999, and in 2000 launched the Creative NOMAD Jukebox. This was followed later by the Creative MuVo and Creative ZEN families of players. Some of these products have gone on to win various critic awards and such.

Posted in Games,Microsoft,Xbox 360 by Nino Marchetti on November 14th, 2007

xbox-live-5.jpgCan you believe Xbox Live, the online arm of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 video game console, turns five tomorrow? Neither can we. That being said, this is a shining example of an area where Microsoft held on to become a dominant force in a vertical category. To celebrate this crowning moment several announcements were made which should make things even more interesting.

For starters, Microsoft is giving away for free between 12:01 a.m. PST on Nov. 15 and 11:59 p.m. PST on Nov. 16 an Xbox Live Arcade game for download. Of even bigger interest to gamers, particularly fans of the original Xbox, is word of a free system update which will offer, among other enhancements, the ability to purchase and download original Xbox games. These Xbox Originals look to initially include Halo,” “Psychonauts,” “Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge” and “Fable,” among others.

Art.EngineFerrari-inspired. Wireless. $20,000. These descriptors all refer to the new high end Art.Engine “executive” audio system introduced today by design studio David Wiener Ventures. This limited edition offering is available in a quantity of 1,000 only.

The Art.Engine is actually licensed by Ferrari for what we think is marketing purposes. It stands 47 inches tall and 6 inches deep. It combines twin-speaker arrays, wireless signal input, and digital electronics in a tower design. Each of its two channels, according to its maker, hosts eight three-inch DWV carbon-fiber, high-performance low-to-midrange woofers, and one 1.1-inch ScanSpeak soft-dome tweeter with a Neodymium motor.

R2-D2 Soy Sauce bottle: disturbance in the force

R2-D2 Soy Sauce bottle

We all love R2-D2, but this may be taking things to the extreme. For those who love the little droid too much and at the same time have an unhealthy obsession with Soy Sauce, the two have been combined. Just pour your soy sauce into R2(The liquid kind, not the sorta liquid kind), pop R2′s head back on and start pouring sauce from the little bot.

Seriously, did you ever think you would see the day when soy sauce pours forth from a droid head? I’m actually kinda disturbed, but I know some of you will find it cool. But wait, it gets better…

Eco Media Player: the green PMP

the green PMP

Environmental groups have been all over the iPod due to it’s eco-unfriendliness to the environment. The Eco Media player may not be an iPod killer, but it should make the environmentalists a bit happier. The device is a video player, music player, fm radio, LED torch, photo viewer, hi-fi recorder, memo recorder, data storage device and a mobile phone charger. So how is this eco-friendly with all of these functions? Simple. It has no need for replacement batteries.

You wind it via a fold-out handle on the rear. (Or if you don’t care about baby seals and Polar bears, you can charge it via a USB cable to your computer). 40 minutes of audio play requires only one minute of self powering.

LA Auto Show: GM’s Project Driveway gets you a free electric car for 3 months

Posted in Automotive,LA Auto Show 2007 by Darrin Olson on November 13th, 2007

Project Driveway with the Chevy Equinox fuel cell technologyWant to get a chance to drive the hydrogen-powered Chevy Equinox Fuel Cell for free, all expenses paid for three months? Well, if you’re really passionate about alternative automotive fuel sources, creating less of an environmental impact with your car and you live or work in metropolitan New York City, Washington, D.C. or southern California you could be chosen for Project Driveway. This project is the first of its kind to put real drivers in real-world situations in a large-scale market test of fuel cell electric vehicles.

Within minutes of arriving at our hotel in LA we were whisked over to the convection center where we were able to get a hands-on look at the Chevy Equinox Fuel Cell and even got to drive it on actual LA streets, not some weak obstacle course in a parking lot. Driving the car felt an awful lot like driving any other car, and I think that was GM’s goal. It didn’t smell funny, there was no crazy steering wheel or driver controls and it didn’t fly. However it did make a unique air-blowing noise from the back when it first started, but no sounds reminiscent of the Jetsons.

The IOGEAR Bluetooth Audio Transport links wirelessly with a Bluetooth music playing device like a mobile phone or MP3 player, acting as a portable audio receiver you can plug headphones or small speakers into.
