Sprint Launches Airave In-Home Cell Coverage

Posted in Mobile Phones, Samsung, Sprint by Darrin Olson on September 17th, 2007

Sprint Airave from Samsung provides wireless in-home Femto cell phone coverage through broadband internetSprint along with Samsung has released the Airave wireless femto device providing improved in-home cell phone coverage for Sprint customers. The Airave device picks up signals from any of Sprints cell phones (especially if you normally have poor coverage in your home) and transfers them wirelessly to your existing broadband internet connection sending your calls through the web.

The Airave has a couple of really nice features involved including the aforementioned improved signal in your home. Devices like these will work in buildings where the construction materials normally would block out cell phone coverage. Also, with this device Sprint customers can take advantage of making and receiving phone calls nationwide without using any minutes off of their plan.

The device and features don’t come free, however. The actual Airave box goes for $50, and then service can cover up to 3 phones for $15/month for individuals or $30/month for families on top of whatever plan fees you have currently. This price add-on may sound like a too much extra until you consider that you may be able to drop your land line and replace it with the this.

Unfortunately the Airave is only available to select areas of Denver and Indianapolis right now, but Sprint plans on rolling it out to the rest of the nation as soon as next year.

So this box will replace the use of “free roaming”, saving Sprint money, plus add to the customer’s monthly bill so the customer gets what he or she is already paying for…nice trick, Sprint, will you fire me as a customer for seeing through another implementation to increase the revenue you’re losing due to inept service, inept customer service rep training, inability to get billing right after months (years???) after the assimilation of Nextel? Drop me Sprint, so I can be free to go to a cell company that does what they say, does it well, and makes money so I can be sure they’re not going to go belly up before my contract is null and void…

Oh, and what about internet providers like Comcast that takes steps to thwart their customers from using their internet connections for phone service since they want to sell their own telco services?

Another half baked, half thought out pie in the sky Sprint plan developed by wizards who don’t know reality.

  2. John Smith Says:

i agree with that entirely. but with wiMax sprint can turn all of that around. they’ll probably not do it right, so i spoke too soon. maybe tho.
