OLPC $100 laptop sees a price hike for its expected production costsNicholas Negroponte’s $100 OLPC laptop has found its way into the news again, this time due to another increase in the laptop’s price which now expected to be up to $188, despite the device continuing to carry its “$100 laptop” name.

The expected price for the OLPC XO has been more than $100 for quite some time now, and this announcement tacks on another $13 from the expected price Negroponte unveiled at the end of April.

Production of the XO is expected to start taking place in October, and in the meantime they non-profit company is busy testing the device and making any necessary corrections for it goes into production, according to Negroponte.

The OLPC foundation plans to sell the laptops to government agencies around the world who will in turn provide them for free to children who otherwise would likely not have the opportunity to have access to a computer. The foundation may also sell them commercially but for even more than the $188 price tag. Microsoft has recently become involved with the laptops seeing if they are capable of running Windows, and Intel has also jumped on board recently, offering to provide processors for the next generation of XO’s.
