Mitsubishi Unveils the Electric i MIEV Sport

The Mitsubishi i MIEV Sport electric car has a solar roof and wind turbines in the grillMitsubishi took the wraps off of a new zero-emission, all-electric concept car called the e MIEV Sport. Aside from having a pretty cool look to it, the i MIEV Sport features a couple less-common additions to add juice back to the battery while driving.

As with many other electric and hybrid cars, this one uses a regenerative braking system, but also adds a solar roof and small wind turbines built into the front grill. Additions like these aren’t going to make a drastic difference in the range, but adding a convex solar roof was found to bring as much as an additional 20 mile range to a Prius. The turbines would likely be less, but certainly can’t hurt.

The i MIEV Sport houses the batteries in the center of the car (often the safest place for them, much like gas tanks) under the passenger floor. It utilized three electric motors, one for each front wheel and a third for both back wheels. It also saves some juice by using LED based lighting for some of the lights and takes advantage of heat absorbing window glass to help with the cabin air conditioning.

To quote The Simpsons: “In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics”. Seriously - I can’t imagine any engineer adding the complexity of wind turbines to a car that already has regenerative braking. Must have been a marketing person who came up with that physics defying breakthrough. How utterly pointless.

so many people openly hostile to the wind-turbine-on-a car concept. Ever heard of sail boats? Perhaps this “pointless” add-on has a point that Mitsubishi wants to make.
More and better turbines designed to charge the batteries of an electric/internal combustion hybrid (not this pure electric concept) seems like a fine way to harvest all that wind energy flowing around the car body at 60 mph.

I LOVE THE REVERSE TEAR DROP BODY,it’s something actually new (it’s far different from the old Isetta). A stylist could easily pen a 4 door, mini-van or even an urban pickup truck using this configuration. I’d buy one for the looks alone.
