PSP 3.5 Firmware Upgrade Update |
When Sony released the version 3.5 firmware upgrade at the end of May the big talk was the new Remote Play functionality that was added through the update and little else. Lightly grounded rumors had been floating since the firmware release that it may have also increased the processor speed of the PSP, but it’s pretty hard to tell since all the games running on it are at the 266 MHz speed.
When the PSP was originally released the processor had more speed potential but it was capped due to what most assumed was to prolong battery life, but now Sony has confirmed that the 3.50 firmware upgrade did indeed increase the processor clock speed from 266 MHz to 333 MHz.
Increasing the speed lets developers create games utilizing the faster processor, but could also cut short the battery life. Current speculation now suggests that Sony’s decision to increase the processor speed may be further indication that a redesign is coming for the PSP, maybe with a slimmer design, brighter display (this would be great) and a longer battery life to support it all.
