Manhunt Controversy Erupts |
The creators of the “Grand Theft Auto” franchise are no strangers to controversy but their latest about to be released video game is making things even hotter under the collars of several politicians around the globe.
Rockstar Games will release “Manhunt 2” on the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 2 and PSP next month but already two countries have barred sales of the video game within their borders. The United Kingdom and Ireland have blocked sales of the game citing its extreme graphic violence and the American ESRB has given the game a rating of AO for adults only, a ruling that Rockstar will likely appeal. Australia may also follow in line with their European cousins and bar the game from being sold on their shores. An American attorney, Jack Thompson, has launched a lawsuit against Take Two, the game’s distributor, to try and block the sales of “Manhunt 2” as well as this fall’s “Grand Theft Auto IV”.
The hubbub about “Manhunt 2” concerns the depiction of violence in the game where you can pick up weapons and brutalize inmates within the confines of an asylum. If the AO rating holds fast then retail chains like Wal-Mart will not carry “Manhunt 2” resulting in millions in lost game sales for Rockstar and Take Two.

Dear Friends of Western Civilization:
I was delighted to target Manhunt 2 and Take-Two for mutual destruction. Looks like the plan is working.
Jack Thompson, Attorney
The step was a good one and required so that these type of sadistic substance doesn’t come to gaming world ..
i disagree sanjay.
movies like hostel and saw are purposely sick and twisted. its something we as consumers choose to watch as consenting adults.. and i believe we should be allowed to watch that if we want.
videogames are no different. someone 18 years old or older should be allowed to choose for themselves if thats the type of game they want to play.
it seems to me like censorship, and theres nothing honorable about that.
wow i bet u sanjay has like five 5year old kids and hes worried for them, and is afraid that they’ll get scared by the nasty video game, boo-hoo
I Totally Disagree with banning games and such, Joel is totally right, im 21 years of age and if i want to play manhunt i will, and its not going to make me go berserk and wrap a shopping bag around somebody’s head just because i scene it in a game i play. There is movies such as hostel like already mentioned and there fun to watch a bit sick but that is what i choose to watch.
i agree with Joel that if you are of 18 years of age you should be able to choose what you want to play and or watch. at the age of 18 your very close to an adult and your developed enough to know from wrong and right, and not immature and are going to try these sick things done in the game/movies.
Ben
Hostel and such movies don’t give you the same kind of sense that “you” are the one doing it. (Sorry if badly put across). Whereas in a movie like Hostel where you are watching another person go through the horror, video games give you the control over the actions of the people in the game. It basically feels more like the one in the scene is you.
Another point is, I don’t think the problem is 21 year olds such as Ben Petti playing these games, but instead the horrifically shit parents buying their children video games such as manhunt 2, and once the children are in Juve for stabbing innocent people, then they start complaining about these games. I think that first, we should ban these games until parents can keep control of kids, and then these games could be released.
Hehe… well Jack looks like you failed your little mission to ban Manhunt 2 because its on the shelves everywheres and I own it, so too bad for you!
Ohyes Chris because a child is more likely to stab a person than a drugged up 21 year old playing video games all day… Do you know what, get off the crack and get a job.
hey you guys need to read this article i have been doing tones of study on this subject of media violence.
