Asus Eee PC 701 Pricing and Launch Date

Posted in ASUS, Notebooks, UMPC by Chris Weber on June 7th, 2007

Asus Eee PC 701 small notebook computerThe Palm Foleo looks like it will be a pretty interesting device despite it’s questionable necessity and a $600 price tag. When we first read about the Asus Eee PC we thought it might be pretty cool as well, but we’re confident about the Eee in the ‘coolness’ arena now with an expected $199 price tag.

The Asus Eee UMPC looks like its no slouch in the world of 7″ notebooks, either. It’s designed particularly for portability combined with browsing the web with a 7″ screen, full keyboard, webcam and microphone. It has a weight of just 1.9 pounds and promises 512MB of RAM with a flash drive for storage in sizes from 4GB to 16GB. Wireless comes standard and built-in, and rumors of 3G abound as well. It would be nice to see a few more specs or something on the Asus Eee website, but for $199 I think I’ve seen enough. The Asus Eee PC is expected to be available some time in August.

  1. Bob Carroll - Las Vegas Says:

The Asus Eee PC-701 looked great until I saw that it only has a video resolution of 800×480 pixels. Even the “toy” OLPC’s 7.5″ screen has 1200×900 resolution.

Some software will not even run at less than 1024×768 and reading PDF files and web browsing will be made difficult.

Asus needs to rethink the Eee PC-701 screen resolution or at least offer a same size but higher resolution option. This is supposed to be a notebook and not a PDA. 800×480 may have been okay in the 1990’s but it is way behind the technology curve these days.

  2. Levi Smith Says:

Some people have criticized the 701’s display resolution. 800×480 is actually perfectly suitable for a wide variety of applications.

  3. CBR in Ghana Says:

Bob Carroll is right and Levi Smith is wrong.

  4. Andy Says:

Now thats an intelligent comment. Look 800×480 is fine for many applications, and given the price I thinks its a good deal. If you want higher resolution then you’ll have to buy another device and pay a bit more, eg eee 900 series.
