YouTube and Google Face More Copyright Challenges

Posted in Google,YouTube by Darrin Olson on May 5th, 2007

Copyright troubles for YouTube from the English Premier League and Bourne CoFriday YouTube and their new parent company Google were hit with another copyright infringement lawsuit, this time from England’s top soccer league and a US music publisher.

The Premier League and Bourne Co. issued the lawsuit citing that not only does YouTube have their copyrighted content on the video sharing website, but that they are encouraging people to view the footage on the website and subsequently are “knowingly” misappropriating the two companies intellectual property. By this, according to the lawsuit, the operators of YouTube are exploiting the valuable intellectual video property for their own gain without any payment to the owners of these videos.

This lawsuit comes less than two months after Viacom sued YouTube and Google for copyright infringement of their television programming, and 6 months after the search engine giant Google purchased the YouTube

Apple CEO talks about environmental practices and goals for computer and electronic production and wasteIn an open letter posted on the Apple.com website, company CEO Steve Jobs defended his company’s environmental initiatives to reduce waste and remove toxic contaminants used in the manufacture of Apple’s computer and electronic products.

Apple has recently come under fire by several environmental organizations that claim the company isn’t doing its part in practicing green initiatives and lowering its carbon footprint. Jobs countered the claims with an overview of Apple’s efforts in eliminating the manufacture of CRTs (thus removing lead from the landfill); discontinuing the use of arsenic and mercury from its LCD screens; and pointing out that it had been sans polyvinyl chloride and brominated flame retardants in its packaging for several years.

Apple also has plans to raise by 30% the amount of e-waste it recycles in four …

Bark Be Gone

Utlimate Dog Silencer to help with barking dogsDogs and barking go together like cats and meowing, milk and cookies and Britney Spears and a wig. If you’re the owner of a pooch that can’t seem to learn to stop barking at every slightest thing you should think about investing in Good Life’s Ultimate Dog Silencer.

No, it’s not a trip to the pound; instead it’s a doohickey that fastens onto a collar. Every time your dog barks the UDS emits high-pitched sonic and ultrasonic frequencies, the latter being only in the range that your canine companion can hear. The makers of the device claim that eventually your dog will come to understand that every time they bark an unpleasant sound is heard, and just like Pavlov learned in his famous experiments, they will pick up the hint and stop barking so much.

If you think this sounds a …

Digg Stands Their Ground on AACS Encryption Key Posts

Digg leaves posts with AACS encryption code for HD DVD and Blu-rayDigg This was the last post on the Digg Blog yesterday by founder Kevin Rose posting the one-key-to-rule-them-all encryption key that can be used to break the protection on secure HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs.

The issue of breaking the AACS encryption code of HD DVD’s came about very shortly after the DVD’s using the encryption was released – 8 days after it was released to be exact. An individual called Muslix64 posted information to compromise the HD DVD protection back in December, and the following month was able to use the same method to compromise the protection of Blu-Ray discs as well.

Since then another individual found that there was one “master” key that could be used to break the encryption of all the discs instead of having to find the individual key for …

Portable Motion Speakers

Posted in Speakers by Chetz on May 2nd, 2007

eRevolution Portable Motion SpeakerLooking like something out of “The Fifth Element” comes the Portable Motion Speakers from e-Revolution. When you want to adjust the sound level you don’t reach for the volume knob since there isn’t one there; instead you raise your hand up or down and the volume level is raised or lowered accordingly.

Whazzat?

It turns out that there’s an integrated motion sensor embedded inside the units that detects your hand movement, but don’t tell your friends that when they see you do it: instead tell them that you’re using your Jedi powers. You can also change the tuner frequency (they pick up FM radio) the same way.

As for that light, it alternates between blue, green and red to give you some mood atmosphere. You can plug and power the 0.7 watt speakers directly to your computer via USB cable or they take 4 …

Flash Survivor from CorsairFor all of you heavy duty survivor types out there that need dependable technology for your spelunking, deep-sea diving or any other fun pastimes, Corsair claims to have created the world’s toughest flash drive.

The Flash Survivor sounds like it could survive a boat sinking or building detonation: it’s water resistant to a depth of 200 meters (or 20 atmospheres), encased in durable industrial grade aluminum, protected by a ring of rubber molding and surrounded by a metal tube with two end caps. In short, if you’re taking this USB drive anywhere where you really start to question whether it will come back in working condition you’ve probably got a death wish.

Audio Evangelion Headset

Posted in Headsets by Chetz on May 1st, 2007

Neon Genesis Evangelion headsetOoooh, look at this! Fans of the Japanese anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion” are going to drool over the official collector’s headset that has a trippy design by Chara-Ani, a Japanese retailer of all things manga/anime, in partnership with Audio-Technica.

“Evangelion” is a big part of Japanese manga culture taking place in a future where mankind is fighting alien angels using a pack of surly teens inside of giant armored suits. Hey, it doesn’t have to make more sense than that for people to dig it (fans will know that the “01” on the headset’s side stands for the top of the line Evangelion armor.)

Chara-Ani is taking orders (up to a limit of five) now with an expected retail date of September 29 (price: 24,800 yen or about $207 Yankee bucks.) What, you didn’t think this kind of collector’s item would be cheap, …
