Nintendo is already making an enormous profit while Sony has not sold nearly enough PS3's to cover the production costs. Essentially Sony is losing billions while Nintendo is making billions. Sony was expecting to sell virtually all its consoles, which is necessary to get the profits they set out to achieve when they invested so much money into the PS3 project. Nobody mass-produces an expensive product unless they think they can sell nearly all of them. For example, suppose Nintendo makes a $100 (USD) profit for every Wii sold, and Sony makes a $150 (USD) profit for every PS3 sold; what matters is what percentage of their product has been sold because while Wiis are being sold out, the majority of PS3s remain on store shelves which costs Sony a whopping $450 for EACH unsold PS3 (in this example).
