Sony has announced a March 23, 2007 launch date of the Playstation 3 game console to Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. This launch comes a little over two months after the PS3 release in Japan and in the US.
The release had been rumored for some time in March of this year, but until now an exact date for the release had not been set. The console will go on sale priced at €599, £425, AUD 999.95, NZ 1199.95. This price is for the 60GB model of the PS3 which is the only model that will be available initially, and that UK price equates to over $840 USD which is quite a bit more than the $600 consumers have been paying in the US. Sony plans to make around 1 million units available for the launch, with 300,00 of those going to the UK alone. If demand warrants it Sony said they may offer the 20GB model later in the year.
This adds the Sony PS3 into the game console war for these markets against rivals Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Even though they have the latest launch date and easily the highest price game console, analysts including Research and Markets speculate that the PS3 may end up winning the game console war in the years to come.
Along with the release, SCEE also announced over 30 games that will be available for the launch which inlcude:

“Following the hugely successful launches of PS3 in Japan and North America, we are absolutely delighted to be able to bring significant numbers of PS3 to the SCEE territories. To be able to launch with over 30 titles across every genre shows that this is our strongest launch line-up in the history of PlayStation, and is what PlayStation fans in Europe have been crying out for.”, said David Reeves, President of SCEE.
Even though Sony has had a recent slump in sales, with only 1 million PS3 units available for this entire market you might want to start thinking about getting in line soon.
SlipperyBrick will have more information on this launch as it develops.
