Microsoft to Sell Windows Vista via DownloadMicrosoft revealed three new mechanisms for customers looking to buy, upgrade, or otherwise license Windows Vista. The new options are designed to offer greater flexibility in obtaining the new operating system and to ensure users have the edition of Windows Vista that matches their needs. The announcement is made in the shadow of the worldwide availability of Windows Vista on January 30th.

The new purchase options are:

Windows Anytime UpgradeWindows Anytime Upgrade allows customers to upgrade their current version of Windows Vista to a more advanced or feature-rich edition through an Internet transaction. This option will be available in the Start menu in Windows and allows users to select the desired upgrade version and purchase it online.

Windows MarketplaceWindows Marketplace makes Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office release available for direct download. Windows Marketplace will also offer a variety of Windows-compatible hardware and software, including Windows Vista certified products.

Windows Family Discount – Windows Family Discount is designed to reward multiple-PC households who buy retail copies of Windows Vista Ultimate. The limited-time offer runs from Jan. 30 through June 30 and allows North American customers to license two additional copies of Windows Vista Home Premium for use on other PCs in the home for $49.99 each.

The new distribution methods are targeted at users running Windows XP, but the hefty hardware requirements of Vista may lead many people to purchase a new PC anyway. It remains to be seen how many users will purchase Vista by downloading it from the Internet.

Windows Anytime Upgrade and Windows Marketplace both mark a shift in the industry. With Anytime Upgrade, OEMs and other channel partners will be able to offer Windows Upgrades through a new e-commerce infrastructure developed by Microsoft. Windows is the life blood for Microsoft and it will be interesting to see of the new distribution methods pay off.
