Sony Corp. has recently stated that it may not be reaching it’s shipment target for this year with the PlayStation 3 game console due to a crossover parts shortage with the Blu-ray high-definition disc drive. Sony’s plans are to ship two million PS3 players before the end of this year in the U.S. and Japan, and six million worldwide in Q1 of next year.

“The honest answer is it’s more of a target’” for PlayStation 3 shipments, Jack Tretton, co-chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said yesterday in an interview. “Clearly we’ve had production issues.”

A smaller number of shipped PS3 consoles would give Microsoft XBox and Nintendo Wii a jump on already competitive console market when they have their consoles go out next month in time for the holiday buying season.

Sling Media Inc. and Symbian Limited recently announced that the two companies are partnering to bring customers the SlingPlayer Mobile TV experience to Symbian-enabled smartphones.

The partnership involves Sling Media porting a version of its SlingPlayer Mobile software application to the Symbian OS in select European and Asian countries during the 4th quarter 2006 and ultimately to the U.S.

The SlingPlayer Mobile service on supported Symbian smartphones will give users access to their living room television to watch recorded shows, pause, and rewind live TV, or even queue new recordings. Any program that can be watched at home will be viewable through a Slingbox on supported Symbian smartphones through standard network connections, such as 3G cellular and WiFi SlingPlayer Mobile.

Apple said yesterday that it had discovered that a some of its Video iPods shipped with a Windows virus on the player.

“Less than 1 percent” of the Video iPods sold after Sept. 12 were infected with the Windows RavMon.exe virus, Apple said.

“This known virus affects only Windows computers, and up to date anti-virus software which is included with most Windows computers should detect and remove it,” Apple said in a statement on it’s web site. “So far we have seen less than 25 reports concerning this problem. Innovation like this are great to see, and this one really caught my eye. Nokia recently announced that it has completed its acquisition of Loudeye Corp for about $60 million. Loudeye is a leader in digital music distribution across Europe. According to new rumors surrounding Apple Computer, the digital music behemoth is readying two new cellphone models for possible release in January. In a report by Prudential Equity Group analyst Jesse Tortora, these new models could launch at the January 2007 MacWorld conference. Reports of Apple officially filing for the ‘iPhone’ trademark further fuel the rumors.

Tortora went on to say that “recent checks” give him reason to believe Apple will begin selling a smartphone and a slim music phone.
